After years of speculation, Netflix's Marilyn Monroe biopic titled Blonde is set for a 2022 release date. The news of the announcement brings with it a controversial caveat.

That's because, for the first time in Netflix's history, one of their original films will carry with it an NC-17 rating.

For some, the news of the rating carries disappointment. Others, however, look forward to bearing witness to what promises to be the most true-to-life tale of the blonde bombshell that fans have ever seen.

It's official — Netflix's upcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic will be rated NC-17.

Ana de Armas stars as the legendary actress/model in Blonde — a film that has been given the extremely rare adults-only rating by the Motion Picture Association for strong sexual content.

This came as a surprise to everyone, except for the film's director Andrew Dominik.

“It’s a demanding movie," Andrew explained to Screen Daily. "If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the [expletive] audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office," he said.

"It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right?" Andrew argued.

Although Netflix hasn't shied away from streaming films with an NC-17 rating in the past, this will be the first feature film produced by Netflix to receive an adults-only rating.

Now that the film has been rated NC-17, a theatrical release for 'Blonde' could prove troublesome.

This is because certain cinemas have steered clear of showing films with such a hardcore rating. However, in the past, Netflix has always relied on smaller theater chains whose guidelines for release arent' as stringent.
