You’ll Be Able To See A Rare Harvest Moon Tonight, Friday The 13th

If I've learned anything during my extensive 23 years on this earth, it's not to mess with the all-powerful being that is the moon. Ocean tides? Moon. Menstrual cycle? Moon. Weird-as-heck ish happening with dogs? Moon. Your boyfriend forgetting your birthday because he was 'out with his boys'? That's not the moon—that's just him.

My main point here is that you can tell a lot about people's energies and moods when you start paying attention to moon cycles. Different points in the lunar cycle mean different things, and each month, the full moon is said to affect a different thing, and ends up being named as such.

Following me? Let's dive a little deeper.

The full moon closest to the autumnal equinox is called the Harvest Moon.

This year's autumn equinox is on September 23rd, which puts the closest full moon, our Harvest Moon, on this Friday September 13th.

Yep—we're getting a special full moon on Friday the 13th. This spooky coincidence only happens around once every twenty years, with the next Friday the 13th Harvest Moon expected to take place August 13, 2049.

The Harvest Moon isn't just named for it's proximity to Fall.

Leading up to the full moon this Friday, the moon will rise at nearly the same time each night, meaning that "it will appear less than 27 minutes later every night, thus providing enough light for farmers to continue gathering crops during the peak of the harvest season," according to Farmers’ Almanac.

If you’re in the Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones, you'll see the moon as soon as the sun sets.

Also, don't be surprised if it seems either much larger or much smaller than usual.

The harvest moon coincides with apogee—"that point in its orbit which places it at its greatest distance from the Earth: 252,100 miles away," which could cause the moon's distance to look different.

Though I can't guarantee that you'll see Jason this Friday, I'm almost certain that some general creepy vibes will be afoot.

As for the boyfriend who forgot your birthday, Full Moons are a good time to end cycles in your life that no longer serve you, so take that as you will!
