Woman Claps Back At Landlord Who Tried To Raise Rent ‘In The Name Of Jesus’

It is most likely that everyone has had an experience with a landlord that was less than satisfactory. Whether it be over something mundane like rent, or something more along the lines of, say for instance, your upstairs neighbor having bought a set of DJ decks and doesn't sleep and your landlord wants nothing to do with it because they think your upstairs neighbor needs the practice as they've booked them for their niece's wedding.

Regardless of what may or may not have happened to me in the past regarding a certain landlord, I never had one trying to justify put my rent up by using the bible!

This is Rachel Bell.

She's a fiction writer, self-declared social media expert, and maker of weird-yet-hilarious t-shirts.

Using social media as tool with which she can share insight on her wild-as-heck daily life is basically her forte.

She's a Brooklyn, NY native.

Meaning that she's familiar with most of the ridiculous antics that go into trying to find an apartment in NYC, which, in case you weren't aware, could fill a five thousand page book.

The last thing that Rachel Bell expected when she came home one evening was to find a letter from her landlord which said he was putting her rent up.

However, it was the justification that he used for the rent increase which attracted her attention.

Is that...uh...legal?

Well, kind of. Landlords sometimes sneak into their lease agreements that they can change the price of rent on tenants so long as they give them "advance warning," though the landlords get to decide just how much warning qualifies.

The letter she received appeared to use verses from the good book as a reason as to why the rent would be increasing...

The staggeringly bold move on behalf of the landlord did not go down as expected, however, as Bell was justifiably, and righteously, peeved.

Bell tweeted the picture of the letter with the caption: "DID MY LANDLORD JUST TRY TO USE THE BIBLE TO RAISE MY RENT…LMAOOOO"

The internet was baffled en masse. The tweet has received over 5,000 retweets and 50,000 likes since it was posted.

The twitter-verse was surprisingly quick with pointing out the error in the landlord's choice of verse.

Thus proving that absolutely everyone on twitter can be super religiously informed when it comes to rent disputes.

Numbers 18:21 actually states: "To the Levites I have given every tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service that they do, their service in the tent of meeting"

If you're gonna make a ridiculous argument, at least do your research honey.

But holy heck was Bell READY TO GO.

Despite the internet's noble desire to help Bell out of her apparent spiritual jam, it turned out that Bell didn't need any help from anyone in dealing with the situation as it came to pass that she was more qualified than most to handle the holier-than-thou landlord.

Bell posted the below message, updating the twitter-verse with this caption, "UPDATE: the good news is i work for a real estate startup and know the law, and my landlord and i have a pretty chill relationship (until this lmfao). so i just texted him this:"

Twitter | racheltacobell

Yes, as it turns out, Bell works for a real estate agency, so knows the laws that her landlord can and can't impose on her rent.

Oh, and she can apparently quote scripture like an absolute champion, something which I never thought I'd say.

Since posting the message she sent, she received all of the kudos that the internet could shower her with for standing up to her landlord with such devastating efficiency.

The lesson here would appear to be never try and take advantage of your tenants... especially when they know their rights! Many people are taken advantage of each year by certain, greedy landlords. And, as funny as this instance may be on the surface, it is good to see an instance of someone standing up to their landlord when their being treated unfairly and winning... and it's especially good when someone does it by starting the message with "Hey brucie baby..."

The bravado and accuracy with which Bell shut down the landlord has made her something of a viral sensation.

People in particular shared a love of the opening to her message, with some even saying that they were going to frame it...

Finally, Bell uploaded a final screenshot of her landlord's reply, in which he suggested that the letter had been a joke.

Bell posted it along with the caption: "UPDATE 3: this will be my last tweet ever because i’m f***ing deceased. I've been messing with Bruce for over a year now. I hate/love my landlord."

And, just like that folks, the internet once again began tearing itself apart, with hundreds of people arguing over whether Bruce Landlord (as I'm now calling him) was being serious or not... or just about religion!

The comments on Bell's tweets quickly erupted into a fierce argument war between those saying, "Oh, it's just a joke, let it go," to, "He's the worst person ever and should be fired out of a cannon into the sun!" And, then there were those as above who just wanted to argue about things that I'm not really sure that they were arguing about... It's almost like tweeting anything with a religious inclusion, regardless of how minute or large, is a bad idea.

So, who knows if Bell's landlord was being serious?

Personally, I just enjoyed the journey, it had so many of the elements I look for in a narrative. It had a thrilling intrigue and shock factor at the start, it had a good villain that the hero eventually defeated with grace and poise, and then it had a twist at the end that left you questioning your perception of the world and wondering what was real and what wasn't... was he joking, or was it real? It's basically a modern day inception told over tweets, except with added confusion due to the fact that the general public can react to the events in real time.

Overall, my favourite response to the whole affair was this tweet, from Katherine, which I felt really underpinned most of the internet's response to the story.
