20 Fascinating Pics That Just Get Better With The Backstory

A picture on its own may be interesting enough, but don't you ever wonder about the backstory behind some of them? Sometimes, the story is just as interesting as the picture itself, if not more so.

The pics in this list follow that idea to a T. They're fascinating to look at, but even more fascinating to learn about.

"I took a picture of this magnificent bull elk while driving to my hair appointment in East Tennessee this morning."

It's funny how so many people will snap shots of deer or elk in their yards, but so few will get a picture while driving. To be honest, this is just as cool as a random backyard encounter.

"I work as a maintenance engineer in a steel factory. And I have weird tastes. So the rising sun over our junk yard this morning looked pretty."

I don't think you have to have weird tastes to appreciate a sunrise like this. Even with pile of garbage in the way, this is quite the view. It's surprisingly breathtaking.

"I always thought hawks were solitary creatures. Then I spotted these two."

I guess there's a first time for everything. I'm sure these hawks are, like, mates or something, but it still seems like it would be rare to find two of them together. Nature is so amazing!

"Two humming birds landed at the same time on my Rods while out fishing!"

At a glance, it almost looks like these hummingbirds have perched themselves on a couple of random branches. And that's probably what the hummingbirds thought they did! They probably won't like it if the lines start shaking, though.

"We built a 'ramp' and nest so this eagle can practice flying and heal its broken wing."

OP gives a bit more info: "Eagle was captured to be sold in the black market. Wild life conservators found him with a broken wing and tail. He was going to be euthanized. We took him in weeks ago."

That's so cool! They gave this eagle a new lease on life.

"This bunch of deer comes around daily looking for snacks."

I'm not going to lie, if I walked outside to find this at my porch, I'd probably be super freaked out. Yes, deer are generally harmless. But this is a whole gang, and there's power in numbers.

"My (formerly) new belt after a month in my suitcase during the rainy season in the Hawaiian jungle."

Well, so much for new. Even after a month, a belt shouldn't look like this under regular conditions. It just goes to show you there's nothing "regular" about being in the Hawaiian jungle.

"So cold in Chicago today my hair froze on the way to my car.... that’s ice in the brush."

Ah yes, the time of year where walking outside with slightly damp hair is basically a death wish. I don't know if OP had damp hair when they walked outside, but this still isn't pretty.

"This seemed like a great project while I am on WFH, but holy crap this looks like a lot of work."

DIY is fun and games, until you actually have to do it. A good tip for floors, though: if you buy wide planks instead of skinny ones, you'll get the job done a lot faster.

"We've been married for 32 years, and he still buys me flowers."

Sometimes, all it takes is a small gesture like this to show someone how much you care about them. It's nice to see that the love between this couple is still going strong, decades later!

"Took a picture of the sunset on an half-empty plane on my way back home from Italy."

At a glance, it almost looks like we're staring at three identical copies of the same painting. It's weird to think that the sky can look as magnificent as this at any altitude.

"I like to use colored pens at work, usually choosing a color that coordinates with my outfit. Here are the ink levels after about one year."

It looks like someone's really into wearing pink and light blue. But also, this is kind of an amazing idea. It would really make your office presence unique.

"The main road to my house in England. Two cars cannot pass, one has to reverse."

I always find it so weird how a road this narrow can actually lead somewhere. I wonder how often people get halfway down the road, only to realize they're going to have to reverse.

"I made an incubator out of my old fish tank."

See, I would've never thought that this was a fish tank. But it doesn't really look like one at this time, so that makes sense.

I wonder what's going to come out of those eggs (chickens, probably).

"Same barista 2 days apart. I’m a regular, I think she’s having a long day."

When you work in retail or in a service, you tend to remember regulars. So I doubt this barista forgot OP. I hope the rest of her day went a bit better.

"This puzzle came with an extra piece. We were very confused while putting this section together."

I can only imagine how much faster that puzzle would've been put together if that random piece wasn't thrown into the box. It was either a manufacturing error, or done on purpose to add a little challenge.

"Found this film negative in my parents attic. It's a picture they took together before they had kids."

This picture is incredible! But it also makes you think about how our parents have lived entire lives before we were born. And their parents before they were born. And we will have before our kids. Crazy.

"The coffee maker that saved my life a week ago."

OP walked away with their life, and later confirmed that the coffee machine still works.

Seriously, it's still hard to believe that something like this happened. Thankfully, though, it wasn't as bad as it could've been.

"Pyramids of Giza as seen from a nearby Pizza Hut a quarter mile away."

It's so strange to think that something as old and majestic as the Pyramids of Giza can be so close to modern civilization. But they're super close to Cairo, so it shouldn't be that hard to believe.

"The only recording of my Grandpa’s voice. A WWII veteran’s interview by 10yo me for a school project."

OP confirmed that they still listen to the contents of the tape to this day:

"I’ve made a copy and put it in a Dropbox. The sound quality leaves a lot to be desired but I still go through a rollercoaster of emotions every time I hear it."
