19 Controversial Movies That Wouldn't Be Made Today

Have you ever watched a movie and wondered, "why was this made?"

If so, you're in the right place. You don't have to be a professional movie critic to know whether a film crosses the line or not.

Many terrible things in movies may have gotten the green light way back when, but things have changed. Thankfully!

Here are 19 movies that wouldn't be made today.

*Pretty Woman*

As iconic as this romantic movie is, it wouldn't fly today.

A man paying a woman money for sex as a love story? And it's only okay because he's handsome and rich?! To add to that, he tells her how to act and dress.

*Shallow Hal*

This movie, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Jack Black, was about a shallow man falling in love with a 300-pound woman. Since there were a lot of jabs at overweight people, the movie has been labeled fatphobic.

*Wedding Crashers*

From men deceiving women just to sleep with them to jokes about rape, there was so much wrong with this 2000s.

One scene portrays non-consensual sex when Vince Vaughn’s character is tied up and awoken to Isla Fisher sitting on top of him.

*White Chicks*

In recent years, there's been a huge debate over whether the movie is racist.

It centers on two Black men dressing up like white women using whiteface. This has caused many to view the movie as hypocritical.

*Cuties*

People were disgusted by this 2020 French film when it first came out. This had less to do with the film and more to do with the movie poster, which showed young children twerking. People claimed that it sexualized these young children.

*Revenge of the Nerds*

It's hard to believe that Seth MacFarlane wants to reboot this film considering one awful scene.

It's when Lewis has sex with Betty by wearing a mask and pretending to be her boyfriend. It's referred to as “rape-by-deception.”

*I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry*

Oh, boy. Where do begin on this film?

First, the film centers on two straight guys who decide to marry each other so their children can receive healthcare. In addition to insurance fraud, it was a big slap in the face to same-sex couples who couldn't legally wed at the time.

*Sixteen Candles*

This film could be the reason why Michael Schoeffling disappeared from Hollywood.

There was nothing okay with his character Jake passing off his drunk unconscious girlfriend to a nerdy guy. Leaving a woman vulnerable like that is just wrong.

*Mr. Mom*

This '80s film is about an unemployed dad who becomes a stay-at-home dad. Big whoop, right?

While this was an interesting storyline decades ago, it's nothing new today as gender roles have evolved.

*Grease*

This film is meant to stay in the decade where it belongs.

With female empowerment being more important than ever, it wouldn't sit well for females to watch a woman change everything about herself just to be with a man.

*Soul Man*

AMT

This '80s film would never see the light of day. It’s about a white guy who wants to go to law school, but can’t afford it. His solution is to paint his face black. WTF?

*Crocodile Dundee*

In the film, the main character, Mick Dundee, has a disturbing scene with a trans woman in a New York City bar.

After learning about her gender, Mick grabs her crotch to make sure and then does so again to another woman.

*The Breakfast Club*

This cult classic doesn't have a fan in the movie's lead, Molly Ringwald.

She has said that she was only "vaguely aware" of how "inappropriate" John Hughes' writing was in the movie at the time. In one scene, another character tries to peek up her skirt.

*Tropic Thunder*

As much as we love Robert Downey Jr., he was wrong to participate in a film where his character uses blackface. Tom Cruise's character was also made with many Jewish stereotypes in mind. Next!

*The Love Guru*

It's the film that basically killed Mike Myers's career. The white actor insensitively portrayed an Indian guru of love. The poorly-reviewed film was full of negative Indian stereotypes, including overdramatic accents.

*The Aristocats*

Even Disney gets it wrong.

There are many racist moments in the song "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat." For instance, one of the Siamese cats shouts, “fortune cookie always wrong” while using chopsticks as a way to play the piano.

*Ace Venture: Pet Detective*

Sadly, a lot of older movies made fun of the transgender community. In the film, Jim Carrey's character forcefully outs Lt. Einhorn as transgender to her squad.

As if that wasn't bad enough, every single man who had ever been intimate with her begins forcefully throwing up.

*Song of the South*

The 1946 Uncle Remus adaptation is considered Disney's most controversial movie.

It's been widely criticized for glorifying slavery for Black people, as it shows an idyllic master-slave relationship. This was never the norm in real life.

*Blazing Saddles*

The 1974 Western film is about a black sheriff in an all-white town.

While this premise would work today, the racist language and stereotypes in the film would not. At one point, a white person even says the one word you should never say.
