15+ Long Haul Truckers Share Their Creepiest Experiences While On The Road

A lot of weird stuff can happen to a person while they're driving at night, so it only makes sense that those who spend the most time on the road have some of the craziest stories to tell.

Long haul truckers are some of the only people awake and about at the witching hour—other than the ghosts and ghouls of course.

A number of long haul truckers recently took to Reddit to share their oddest, creepiest, and most terrifying experiences while driving at night. From paranormal to immoral, any one of these events would have me pulling a u-turn and going right the frick back where I came from.

One Of Us

Reddit | Dingoguy89

"I was coming back home from a trip from Michigan and I saw these people wearing cult-like robes," this man shares, "One in town, one on a highway, and one in a park, all staring at me."

Unidentified

Reddit | Big_Kona

"I’m a truck driver in the UK," one man writes, "Was driving through rural Scotland one night going down a country lane, all off a sudden I start to see flashing lights come through the trees. Lights of all colors flashing through the trees and causing some really freaky looking shadows on the road.

I’m not a believer of aliens or anything but my first thought was ufos. Safe to say I put my foot down and got out of there."

Bloody Brilliant

Reddit | iamahuman1138

"I dove by a marsh every night when I was going home from work," one woman says, "One night I saw a car pulled over with hazards on. Dude was head to toe covered in blood. No crash, no injury, just covered in blood."

Clowning Around

Reddit | d4hm34

"Saw a clown staggering down an alley in the city, back facing us, while we were coming to a stoplight at like 1am," this person shares, "Looked like he was still blowing balloons (or masturbating). Not seeing his face made it more ominous. I'm not sure if its either really creepy or sad."

Doe A Deer

Reddit | Caperclawed

"I was driving in upstate New York in early spring during deer season and not only where there deer everywhere you had to look out for," this man shares, "there was deer pieces strewn everywhere from cars hitting them, then more cars hitting the roadkill and so on. Literal deer chunks all over the roads. Gross."

Junk In The Trunk

Reddit | stawp_lit

"My great uncle was a long haul trucker and he swears that one time he was driving down the road to see two guys pull a rolled up carpet out of the trunk of their car and throw it in the river," this person writes, "Whether that’s true or not I don’t know, but it’s still creepy none the less."

I'll Be Watching You

Instagram | @jeffsocial416

"I was driving near Las Vegas at around 3am," this person shares, "I had been following a few black SUV's along the highway for a good hour or so. They had Nevada plates that were single digit numbers in order, 1,2,3.

Suddenly they all pulled off the highway down a dirt path. There was no mile marker or cactus that would indicate a path there. It was just dirt. After pulling off the road they all turned their lights off. I didn't stick around."

Out Cold

Reddit | npdfan

"My dad is a truck driver and about 13-15 years ago while resting at the side of the road he woke up in the morning seeing that his entire trailer was robbed empty," this man shares, "My dads a heavy sleeper but his cargo could not have been stolen without at least a forklift and everyone would have woken up by a forklift unloading a trailer.

My dad suspects the robbers used a pump to get some kind of chloroform into his cabin to make sure he couldn’t wake up."

The Kids Are Alright

Reddit | wad_inthe_ran

"My dad drove a truck for 30 years and told me the story of the time he was driving in the middle of nowhere, middle of the night, pitch black, passing under a bridge," one man writes, "He looked up and saw what appeared to be a lone child standing on the bridge, looking down."

Cat's Out Of The Bag

Reddit | Clayterrrs

"Before I became a truck driver I was moving to California from Louisiana," one user writes, "After passing up San Antonio there wasn’t much till El Paso, any gas stations were very far apart.

I pull over to this tiny tiny gas station that was closed but I could still pump gas. No one was there except around 50-100 cats that all look alike most lined up just watching me. They were everywhere, on the gas pumps all around the building."

It's A Wonderful Life

Reddit | notautobot

"My dad met an angel while on the road," one person shares, "He said he picked up an old hitch hiker and his dog, as soon as the man sat down my dad said the man turned to him and said 'I know you have questions for me'.

"It was around the time my fathers father was murdered too, so they talked about it the entire time. Dad pulled over for gas, literally never left where the cab was, and filled up. Once he got back in, the man and dog were gone. Dad went asking around if anyone had seen where the man went, but everyone he asked said they never saw anyone exit his truck."

House Keeping

Instagram | @dolly_ann_photography

"This happened to me last night," one woman shares, "No street lights on dark highway. No other vehicles around.

Some guy is in the far left lane, wearing all black, except at white undershirt I noticed as I passed, bending over sweeping the highway with a hand whisk type broom into the tiniest dustpan."

Cruel End

Reddit | forever_al0ne

"A few years ago some animal rights activists managed to release thousands of mink from a farm next to a large road, at night," one person writes, "The road was more blood than tarmac for miles. Remains everywhere and don't even get me started on the smell."

Climb Every Mountain

Instagram | @luhna_omega

Deep Woods

Reddit | Ein-Macdouglass

"My great uncle was driving through New Mexico during the day, and next thing he remembers is waking up naked in the middle of a forest at night, 50 miles away from his truck," this person writes, "When he got to the hospital, he had radiation poisoning. We still don't know what happened, although he refers to it as the day he was abducted by aliens."

Training Wheels

Reddit | notbuu

"Riding my motorcycle out in the countryside I came across a small tricycle parked right alongside of the road," one person shares, "It was just so far from any houses that I was really kind of freaked out by it. I stopped and looked around, even checking down in the creek that ran alongside the road worried that some little kid could have gone exploring and fallen in. Not finding anything I rode on."

All Aboard

Reddit | salishseawater

"Not me but my grandpa," this woman writes, "He used to drive overnight for a company when I was a kid and every night when he would dock his truck there was a guy to direct him back to make sure he wasn't hitting anything. The guy died unexpectedly.

The night the guy died my grandpa was docking up and he swears to this day the man was standing back there waving him to come on back."

The Bees

Reddit | afterdroid

"I was headed west on I-76 here in Denver just cruising along at about 70mph," this user writes, "Out of nowhere, I saw a massive, almost solid cloud of what looked to be dirt coming at me.

I scanned ahead of me but couldn't see any vehicle it could have came from. With nowhere to go I slowed down and took the hit, hoping there wasn't anything big enough in there to come through the windshield or jack up my truck(owner/operator). It was pretty loud as I smashed through it, the instant it hit I knew it wasn't dirt though. I immediately hit the washers because I couldn't see a damn thing through all of the carnage, my windshield was painted with guts.

Turns out it was bees, freaking huge bees that sounded like rocks when they hit. I can't even imagine seeing that swarm if I was walking, they would kill the crap out of anything in their path."

Tired

Instagram | @livinginharmony

"I picked up a hitchhiker in my small Nissan Versa sedan, and we were driving down the freeway," this man shares, "There was a big vehicle in front of me so I couldn't see what was in front of that when all of a sudden the other guy start yelling 'Tire, tire!' and pointing ahead of us.

I slammed on my brakes just in time to see the SUV in front of us swerve too late as the car in front of it swerved as this massive tire that was rolling down the freeway demolished the front end of the vehicle in front of me and bounded high into the air coming down in front of my car where the steel band broke and it stopped rolling. If I hadn't slammed on the brakes, it probably would have come down on top of me."

Monkey See Monkey Do

Instagram | @beccadonnx

"I saw a baboon in San Saba Texas crouched down next to the road," one man explains, "He lifted something to his mouth and I saw nothing but fangs. So out of place that it gave me goosebumps. One of the locals explained that a lot of fake ranchers will keep exotic animals and when they grow aggressive or go in heat they will cut them loose."

Clone

Reddit | ireland7

"A friend of my cousin was a long haul trucker," this woman shares, "He was making a delivery across the country and was in a hardly used dirt stretch of a rural route. Since the road wasn't exactly peachy he had to drive slowly. He sees another truck slowly approaching from the opposite direction, and he sees the truck is the same as his.

Since this isn't fairly uncommon, he didn't think much of it but as the other one grew closer he decided to honk in recognition of having the same kind of truck. The other one replies and all is good.

That is, until they narrowly and very slowly had to pass one another. He turned to look at the driver and he saw himself. Not a reflection, not a similar person but his exact same copy, same clothes, same hat, same red beard, staring at him. They passed each other and that was that."

Play Ball

Instagram | @jlphpto27

"So I’m driving, and out of nowhere a baseball comes flying out of thin air and slams into my windshield," this man shares, "Like I said I had a pretty good view of the parking lots and there was nobody around except for parked cars. And even those were few and far between. I panicked and pulled off to the side of the road for a minute before driving off. I continued to look around and I drove but I couldn’t find any sign of life. To this day I have no idea where the rogue baseball came from."

See You Later

Reddit | grumpallnight

"I remember being at a barbershop with my grandpa way back when and one trucker told a story about traveling through Florida at night," this man shares, "He said that he hadn't seen anywhere to stop and finally hand to pull to the side of the road to take a piss.

A state trooper pulled up and told him it was dangerous to be stopping in the area, then turned on his floodlight and flashed it out into the dark. The trucker said that dozens of eyes from alligators flashed back in the light and he quickly jumped back in his truck. Didn't stop anywhere like that down there again."

Phone Home

Reddit | NecroSlidre

"Friend of mine was driving an overnight through Arizona on a basically abandoned road and his truck started having electrical issues," this man explains, "After about 5 minutes of that a convoy of law enforcement/federal emergency vehicles passed him.

In the middle of the emergency vehicles there was a flat bed semi with a massive saucer shaped item chained to the bed and covered with tarps About 5 minutes after passing the convoy his radio and truck electrics came back up. He still recounts it as the craziest thing he’s ever experienced on the road."

The Reckoning

Reddit | nahashule

"I was driving through Texas at 3:00am on a lonely highway," this person writes, "All the sudden the highway shifted to the left. I sat up straight and though 'Man, I must be really tired.' Then it shifted again so I quickly pulled over.

When I stepped out I felt some crunches under my feet. I was stepping on locusts. I hopped back into the car and saw what was happening. There were literally millions of wingless locusts on the ground as far as the eye could see. They would all move a couple inches to the left in sync across the highway."

This Is America

Reddit | chibearscubs

"I saw a guy with a red turban with nothing but only an american flag thong dancing menacingly," this person shares, "Humping the air with his junk flailing back and forth."

Ah Rats

Reddit | eDgAr

"One time I was were taking a shortcut through this area that was being worked on, so there wasn't really anyone around because it was late and the streets were closed.

As we're crossing this small bridge, I looked up and saw what appeared to be a zombie rat jumping at my face. Turns out that someone had taken a mummified rat or squirrel and used wire to position it midair on that bridge."

Fireflies

Instagram | @beth71desmarais

"My dad and I parked near an ancient graveyard at night to watch the fireflies," this man shares, "We were in the middle of the country in Virginia.

Suddenly pulled out quickly and began down the road as fast as he could. I asked him why he left. He said didn’t feel right and turned to tell me. There was a man standing next to my window

We never talked about it again."

Every Breath You Take

Reddit | Reddit_PI3

"I drove across the country. Virginia to Washington state," this person writes, "At one point it looked like someone was following me because I kept seeing a steady light behind me. It looked like one headlight was out. I pulled over and didn't see anything. Got back in my car and 30 minutes later, there's the same light again. It was really weird."

Birds Of A Feather

Instagram | @cabinlife_ny_

"I was driving back roads just before dawn through the Ocala National Forest," this user writes, "It was extremely foggy, I could barely see fifty feet in front of me, when I made out the shape of a man in the middle pf the road wearing a grey morning coat. I slowed my car to a slow walking pace and edged over toward the shoulder. As we came abreast of each other, a five foot tall sand hill crane turned his head toward my window a let out a startled shriek."

Three's A Crowd

Reddit | thebasicblues

"Was driving around near Tobermory, Ontario on my way to a BnB, which was located deep in a forested area," this man explains, "Had to drive about 45 min outside of town down back roads which were completely un-lit. It was around 11pm and was pitch black. No other cars were out there. Very quiet and eerie driving by tons of trees like that.

Suddenly my headlights started illuminating something on the side of the road. It was three middle aged people. They were just standing there on the side of the road staring at us as we drove by. In pitch black. No houses or any civilization nearby. They had no flashlights or anything. I was so freaked out by this. I still can't think of a reason why they'd be there."

Toy Story

Instagram | @chloesellings

"I was stopped in traffic and what appeared to be a bouncy ball fell from the sky at an immense speed and went back up almost as fast," this person writes, "I pulled over after and didn't see anywhere it could have come from. Also it was going so fast that any toy I can think of would have been destroyed on impact. I still have no theory of what I saw."

The Jacket

Instagram | @oddtd

"The gas station was 24 hours and my Dad was the only one working the night shift," this guy shares, "A guy comes in and just gives him the creeps. Seems sketchy. He was wearing tight jacket/pants and you could tell he had something in his pants under the jacket. It was during the summer and was warm so why is he wearing a jacket to begin with?

Later on, this truck driver guy in a car comes into the lot, jumps out, and sprints into the store hollering he needs a phone.

Calls 911 to report that he had walked in on a gas station 40 miles back (next closest station) to find the attendant shot and dead. No one else around. And the only other piece of information is that a blue car was speeding out of the lot when the trucker pulled in.

Apparently they eventually apprehend the guy in the blue car, my dad confirms it was sketchy dude from earlier in the night, and they charge him with murder and armed robbery."

Highway To Hell

Reddit | Galperovich

"It was about 2am," this person writes, "There is a particularly long and dark section of highway just outside Laredo...no buildings, towns or lights for about 50 miles. I was in the right lane coming up on a truck and pulled out into the left passing lane.

As I was slowly overtaking this long truck, my peripheral vision caught a sudden movement of this big truck towards the right shoulder. I saw the truck was swerving to avoid hitting a person dressed in all white, white face...who's arms were folded across the chest and eyes were closed as they walked across the highway. I swerved to the left and barely missed this ghostly looking person with my passenger mirror."

Grape Soda

Instagram | @sweet.and.innocent

"I was listening to a radio station when this trucker called in," one person writes, "He said he saw a lot lizard (truck stop prostitute) get out of one truck, douche with a bottle of grape soda, and get into the next truck. When he got out to try and help her, she was gone. Like she vanished. "
