Dad Starts Campaign for Baby Changing Tables in Men’s Toilets

It's obvious these dads, and the children, are having a rough go of it. Anyone would if they had to change their child's diaper in a bathroom without a changing table. It's assumed that the mom would usually have diaper duty when the family goes out to eat, since they have the changing tables. But dads are there too. And at least these two bathrooms have no place to lay a child down. You certainly can't lay them on the floor, so the next best place would be the lap.

Metro had the story back in October, and called attention to skewed gender norms, adding that even the baby-changing symbol often appears to show a woman in a skirt.

Donte Palmer, a dad with three sons, had had enough and started the campaign #Squatforchange. Palmer runs the Instagram account, Three Boys One Goal.

Why Make Changing Diapers More Difficult?

"What’s the deal with not having changing tables in men’s bathroom as if we don’t exist. Clearly we do this often because look how comfortable my son is. It’s routine to him! Let’s fix this problem!" Palmer wrote.

In the photo, which went viral, Palmer is seen squatting down and balancing his son on his lap as he tries to change his diaper. This is not an easy feat. Add to it a really messy diaper and/or a fussy child and you have a catastrophe waiting to happen.

#Squatforchange Continues To Gain Steam

Palmer says he wants fathers and mothers to be treated equally. "Changing tables are important in men’s restrooms because fathers deserve the opportunity to be their best," Donte says, according to Metro. And the hashtag continues to catch on, as other dads continue to post pictures of awkward diaper changes. The change can't come soon enough.
