28 Secret Passages That Eventually Revealed Themselves To Us

I think everyone has, at one time or another, fantasized about having a secret area that only they know about.

Well, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that these secret passages definitely exist in the real world. The bad news is that they're no longer all that secret.

Panic room.

Reddit | SonaSierra19

This bookshelf, at an old Russian house built during the Soviet era, has a skinny door that leads into a secret room.

Victorian style.

Reddit | costa-e

Bookshelves that lead to hidden rooms and cabinets that slide away to reveal unknown staircases are often associated with the Victorian era, so it makes sense that this 19th century Victorian home would have this.

It's easy to get distracted by the football mural and miss that this isn't your average rec room.

Although I'm not sure exactly where this bookshelf passage leads, the room's theme would do a lot to help you remember where it is.

Hidden escape.

Reddit | hobbeslovesyou

This is the lobby area of a college dorm. I don't know why such a utilitarian space would need a secret door, but here it is.

Bedroom goals.

Reddit | MrMcmelon

Wouldn't it be awesome if everyone's bedroom had a secret door that led to...more bedroom? This person is living that very dream.

This mirror passage fits the room so well that it took me an ambarrasingly long time to realize it's open in the first picture.

I'm sure that fact would be much less obvious if I could see what the room looked like when the mirror is up, though.

Regardless, I'm in awe of the fact that somebody installed such a massive vault door for what seems like a cozy little room.

Maybe it's a panic room, too?

Built to fit.

Reddit | pokersquirrel

This house has one more bedroom than it usually advertises. It can be accessed through this custom-cut bookshelf that doubles as a door.

Grocery store of mystery.

Reddit | Nekussa

In this grocery store, there's a secret. To find it you need to find the aisle with ice cream cones, then pull on the shelf holding all the chocolate syrup.

This is convincing enough that I could probably use it for months and never suspect a thing.

And considering how this secret door appears to work, I'll bet that I'd only discover it accidentally after leaning against it.

In that case, I hope there aren't that many stairs.

Janitor's secret.

Reddit | EvTheSmev

I guess it isn't a secret, exactly, but it makes sense that this building would want to hide all the icky janitorial supplies behind a wall.

While movies have taught us to look for secret passages in bookshelves, there are many other places they can appear.

For instance, this average-looking dresser hides a crawlspace that seems to contain this person's safe and other valuables.

Bonus basement.

Reddit | chipdumper

Here's a hidden passage that no one suspects: one that's only revealed after you literally lift up the entire stairway.

Foreboding.

Reddit | http9

Someone found this hidden door in Prague. They didn't reveal what, if anything, lie behind it, so we can let our imaginations run wild.

The defining feature of a secret passage is its subtlety but you'd be hard pressed to find one that achieves that more than this.

The fact that this decorative mantel piece was clearly designed to be a secret compartment just makes me curious about what it was made to conceal.

A kid's dream.

Reddit | avboden

On the left, you can see the half-height door that leads to this secret room, which is really more of a secret apartment.

Not a bookshelf.

Reddit | ldtorre

This shelf is actually the hidden door to a pub's washroom. Making the washroom so secretive in a bar full of drinkers seems like a questionable choice.

While this is certainly an elaborate cover for a secret passage, I also wouldn't be surprised if some discovered it quicker than others.

After all, the only thing that draws more suspicion that we're dealing with a secret passage than a bookcase is a cubby that contains only a large picture of someone precious to the owner.

Well, at least whoever figures it out could only gain access to some wine, unless they're also a safecracker.

Private pub.

Reddit | admin-mod

This vintage Coke machine is actually the cleverly hidden door to this pub. I know they had to do stuff like this during prohibition, but bars are actually legal now.

Starbucks stash.

Reddit | lol-seems-legit

I worked at Starbucks for years and never found any secret doors, but this location in New York state apparently has one that leads to the fridge.

Up and up it goes.

Reddit | Proteon

Admont Abbey Library in Austria features this appealing secret door, which leads up a hardwood staircase with plenty of natural light.

Find it.

Reddit | A_dozen_eggs

No one's quite sure what's behind this door in Bucharest, Romania. It's clearly a door to something, but the absence of labels or handles makes it an appealing mystery.

Dream bathroom.

What's better than a bathroom with a built-in sauna? Clearly it's a bathroom with a built-in hidden sauna, like the one seen here.

While hiding valuables is a classic reason to install a secret passage, this picture illustrates another important reason why someone would do that.

After all, it's far easier to keep one's gun collection out of the wrong hands when nobody but the owner knows where to look for it.

While most of the secret passages we've seen would be fairly difficult to find if we weren't aware of them, I can't really say the same for this one.

Because even if you weren't curious as to why three wine bottles have a whole section of wall to themselves, that big crack showing the outline of the door would probably raise your eyebrows.

To the roof.

Reddit | imsqueakieklean

The person who posted this says it's a secret passage at their hotel in Costa Rica. Looks like it leads to a nice rooftop vista.

Under the deck.

Reddit | Tad_LOL

The area under a deck is usually the domain of bugs and raccoons, but this deck was hiding a larger area than expected.

Lift those stairs.

Reddit | Perspicuum

I guess hidden basements underneath a drawbridge-style staircase are more common than I thought. I wonder what's in that dark basement of mystery.

The downside of secret passages.

Reddit | lofud

"Brought a house that had a hidden room, I found it when I parked a bus on it," wrote this new homeowner. I guess there's a downside after all.
