Supermarket 'Karen' Mistakes Customer For Employee And Launches Hilarious Attack

If this is the first time you're hearing the term "Karen" then I'm just going to go ahead and assume this is also the first time you've ever been on the internet, in which case I say welcome, and I hope you enjoy your stay.

But all sass aside, a "Karen" is typically a middle-aged woman who is angry, entitled, unbelievably rude, and possibly even racist to people in public, and who almost always appears in some sort of viral video or post highlighting just how terrible they truly are.

There are thousands of "Karen" stories out there for you to sift through in utter disbelief, but today's comes from a post that was submitted to the aptly named subreddit, r/IDontWorkHereLady.

This subreddit offers troubled users a safe place where they can vent about their interactions with Karens in the wild, almost always beginning with a nasty, "Do you work here???"

But in this particular case, that question wasn't asked first, which would have certainly helped Karen save herself from some serious embarrassment.

Rather than launch into a furious attack at a supermarket employee, this woman misfired all her anger at another customer.

But instead of correcting her right away, he simply answered her questions as honestly as he could, making for one incredibly hilarious interaction.

The poster, who explained he has a "retail face," found himself the target of one Karen's fury simply because he left his suit jacket in his car while he popped inside his local supermarket.

With just his shirt and tie on, the furious middle-aged shopper assumed this man was an employee and marched up to give him a piece of her mind.

As he explained, he could have told her the truth, and carried on shopping for birthday candles as he'd originally planned. But instead he "decided to enjoy it and settled on being deadpan-literal as a plan."

And that's exactly how he handled this Karen who demanded answers from a person who simply did not have them.

(Note: in the Reddit post, the woman is referred to as DB, which the man explains stands for Douchebaguette.)

"Can you help me?" the woman angrily asked, to which the customer replied, "I couldn't possibly know. I don't know what you want."

As it turns out, the outraged Karen was on the hunt for an eye lash curler, something which this hapless customer certainly couldn't locate for her. That, of course, did not sit well with her.

After branding him an "idiot," the woman demanded to know if he was going to help her find the product, or if she should simply speak to his manager instead.

"I'd say neither but if I had to choose I'd go for option (b)," he replied.

Clearly this is the first time this particular Karen had someone call her on her "manager" bluff, since she expressed shock that he would choose that option.

"You asked me which I'd prefer," the man went on to explain. "If I was offered a rectal exam or a slap in the face I don't want either but I'd prefer the second to the first. See how it works?"

That's when things really started to get heated between these two customers, courtesy of the outraged woman.

"This is RIDICULOUS," the woman exploded, prompting the man to reply, "I completely agree."

"WHERE is your manager?" she asked next.

Speaking quite honestly, the man answered, "I'm not exactly sure but my guess would be at home with his family."

This would be around the time that something finally clicked for this Karen, who realized that perhaps she'd directed her fury at the wrong person.

"You DO work here, don't you?" the woman asked.

"No," the customer admitted.

"WHY DIDN'T YOU F***ING SAY SO?!" she demanded.

"You didn't ask me. Until now."

Eventually, the store manager approached the pair and was quickly filled in on the situation by the amused male customer, all while the Karen floundered in disbelief.

Eventually, all her anger at being unable to find an eye lash curler was redirected at being duped by another customer.

She proceeded to get incredibly loud inside the supermarket again.

This prompted the manager to request security escort her out, finally allowing the male customer to finish his shopping as planned and leave, armed with birthday candles and an excellent "Karen" story.

Understandably, his hilarious encounter with the woman was well-received on Reddit where other users applauded his expert handling of the situation.

"You are a light in the dark to customer service workers, thank you," one person commented, while another added, "What a brilliantly fast mind you've got!"

Many also made sure to highlight the man's perfectly fair way of deciding how to handle people who think he's a supermarket employee: "If they're civil, I'm civil. If they're struggling, I'm helpful. If they're rude, I have fun."
