Artist Covers Up Old Tattoos With Black Backgrounds And Vibrant Floral Designs

Tattoo art has evolved over the years into something really artistic and decorative. There are many ways for an artist to stand out and make their own signature style.

One Chicago artist is making a name for herself with her unique style of black background tattoos that feature colorful blooms, winged creatures, and decorative motifs. The results are really stunning to feast your eyes on.

Esther Garcia has been tattooing for 20 years.

She uses elements of the blackout trend, which was originally a perfect solution for coverup tattoos because of how the black ink could conceal old designs.

This style is really effective because the black background can easily hide any aspects of the old tattoo that a person wants to eliminate.

It becomes like a blank canvas.

Her work has become so popular because of all the incredible detail she includes.

Even people who don't need cover-ups now request this type of technique to be done on their skin.

Esther has also been largely inspired by another art technique not related to tattooing.

I'm talking about a Dutch flower painting tradition that actually comes from the 17th century.

Her beautiful, flowery designs have a very realistic feel and are able to really stand out even on a dark background.

This is all due to Esther's amazing tattooing skills.

She's able to ensure that all the colors, such as reds and pinks, are vibrant enough to create a cohesive feel to the whole tattoo design.

It works!

Not only are her flowers super realistic-looking, but there is so much amazing detail in her work, as you can see in this incredible piece.

Isn't this absolutely stunning?

Even this white on white, grey, and black tattoo is so effective.

I wouldn't think this would work, but it does.

Here's a beautiful calf piece.

The delicate border around the ankle looks like a pair of embroidered tights.

And check out this gorgeous maple leaf cover-up sleeve.

This is so amazing and so powerful. It takes a bold person to be able to pull off something like this.

I'm so in love with this completed sleeve.

The black background makes all the colors so much more vibrant and you can see all the incredible detail here.

I can't get over how detailed and realistic these flowers look on this lovely sleeve.

I mean, it's like looking at an actual flower in real life.

Esther is definitely a master of mixing the elegance of watercolor styling and the minimalism of blackout tattoos.

It's so evident in this intricate and amazingly well-done piece.

This black and white flowery sleeve is definitely a work of art.

There's so much depth in this design even though it has limited colors. What do you think?

How impressive is the shading on this rework of an old tattoo?

You can see the progress from the other pictures and now this piece looks totally different.

Two birds of a feather go together, and boy, do these ever.

The beautiful colors and the detail really make this tattoo stand out for all the right things.

This tattoo is definitely perfect as a cover-up tattoo.

I mean, you can hide anything behind this black background. This is still very effective in its own right.

Be bold or go home.

This design is so interesting all on its own, but when you combine the black background, it looks even more impressive. Right?

How cool is this textile-inspired pattern on this wicked black and grey flower tattoo?

This breaks up the piece so nicely. It fits together like a glove.

What a cool and elaborate sleeve.

Esther is really able to capture each flower in such amazing detail and still keep the integrity of the original colors. Well done.

Another bold piece here. The advantage of using a black background like this is that all the other colors can really shine like the red does here.

This is stunning.

Whether it's flowers or birds, Esther is your lady when it comes to this type of elaborate black background design.

She really has the chops to pull it off.

Words can't explain how impressed I am with this lady's tattooing skills.

If I was bold enough I would get a tattoo sleeve like this in a heartbeat.
