20 People Who Decided To DIY, But Just Left Us Scratching Our Heads

I'm a firm believer in the old phrase, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Because some people never should. And it seems like they can't, in any case.

And that rings true in this list. It's hard to know what these people were thinking when they made these highly questionable DIY projects, but there's no going back now.

"A very easy DIY. Will last forever!"

Pipes underneath a sink. The pipes are covered in an incredibly thick layer of putty.
reddit | 0ld_Fashioned

Welp, this sink probably won't leak ever. It also probably won't be moving any time soon, though I'm not sure that's an entirely good thing.

"DIY Camper."

A DIY camper in the back of a pickup, using plywood and the top of a van to create a room.

I want to think that there are bylaws that keep you from doing things like this. And if not, I'm formally running for city council for wherever this is so I can pass a bylaw to stop this person from doing this.

"Found this beauty in a PC enthusiast Facebook group."

A custom PC built inside of an Epson printer.
reddit | AOD_thatNAVYguy

I mean, it obviously works. I'm just not sure an old printer is the best case to use for a custom PC build. Then again, who am I to judge?

"Was looking at a house today and came across this inventive way of wiring a light."

Two wires passing through an electrical outlet.
reddit | Tigerlinemen57

I'm not an electrician, but even I know that this is both wrong and dangerous. Probably one of the worst parts about house hunting: passing through a house where it's clear the owner did the electrical themselves.

"Using ethernet wires to install a ceiling LED lamp."

An old ethernet port with blue and red wires sticking out of it, leading to a light.
reddit | Crescent-Argonian

This feels like the spiritual successor of the other wire/outlet/light picture. I just can't believe people out there really think they can get away with doing such reckless stuff in the name of DIY.

One part bench, two parts throne.

A bench that's made out of wooden planks sitting on top of two toilets.
reddit | skyline_kid

I think the worst part about this picture is the fact that there's a pallet full of cinderblocks off to the left of the bench. They could've made a decent, rustic kind of bench with those. And they chose toilets. Toilets.

"This thing will probably last two steps..."

A pair of slides made out of multicoloured plastic straws that were cut both in the shape of shoe bottoms, and straps.
reddit | ilovepewdiepie999

I get that everyone is trying to do away with plastic straws since they're the world's worst pollutant or whatever, but this is probably the worst way to recycle them. One way or another, those straws are going to end up in the garbage.

"'My guy can do it cheaper' - My Landlord."

Two light switches and an outlet that should be covered by the same plate, and yet one switch is in a cut plate that's completely different from the other one.
reddit | 561skim

Everyone knows that cheaper almost never means better. I guess lack of quality doesn't matter to some people, though. Still, if this were my landlord's solution to an electrical problem, I'd be trying to move.

"I don't know why people do this."

What appears to be an empty Crown Royal bottle, painted pink, and with a spotted flower in the middle, found in a second hand store.
reddit | Krazy_Steve616

To be honest, painted glass can look really nice. Just not in this case.

The most offensive thing about this weird Crown Royal vase is the fact that it's in a second hand store. Someone really tried to offload this monstrosity.

"My temporary pipe leak drainage solution."

A series of funnels and duct tape attached to a pipe in a wall where a spot has been ripped open.
reddit | [deleted]

See, this is perfectly fine if it really is just intended to be a temporary fix. Because sometimes you need to get creative. The problem is, there are people out there who would do this, and then just leave it. Hopefully OP got their pipe fixed for real.

"Found this in my basement: a pan taped to chair legs. The pan part is so unstable I wouldn’t sit there."

A stool that's made out of an upside down cooking pot on top of wheels.
reddit | SERISET

I was sitting here trying to make sense of this, but I decided that it's kind of impossible to do that. This is a whole mess, plain and simple.

This stone vase.

A vase on a store shelf. It's covered in gravel.
reddit | SammiesHammies

Here I was thinking that a weird vase made out of a painted Crown Royal bottle would be the weirdest vase I'd see today. This one is... worse. Just looking at it is causing me physical pain.

A pallet bed... on wheels.

A daybed made out of a pallet that's been painted white and attached to wheels.
reddit | Bowqueen3

To be honest, I think reclaimed pallets make for good outdoor furniture. This, on the other hand, is just terrifying. The fact that it's on wheels is making it so much worse.

"I was entertaining the idea until I saw the shells."

A car steering wheel completely covered in pearls and shells.
reddit | RubyEggRollz

There are two things that come to mind when I look at this. The first is how uncomfortable it must be to grip this steering wheel. The second is how it would absolutely destroy your face if you ever got into a crash.

Why clip your nails one at a time?

A listing on the Facebook marketplace for a five nail clippers attached by a wire, meant to clip all nails on one hand/foot at once.
reddit | [deleted]

In theory, this is a great idea. In practice, it's horrible. I'm not gonna lie, though, I kind of respect the person who's trying to sell this thing.

"Ever thought, 'why can't I bring that smooth porcelain toilet look to my front yard?' - Me neither."

A brick structure in a yard. At the end of one side, a toilet is sticking out, its bowl and back area covered in dirt.
reddit | thorehall42

I've been sitting here trying to figure out what this is supposed to be, and I've had zero luck. It's amazing how many terrible outdoor DIYs involve toilets as decoration, but this would probably be bad without the toilet.

"Money clock."

A screenshot of a marketplace listing for a clock where the numbers are represented by British coins whose total values correspond to each number.
reddit | x5t0ph

On one hand, the idea that each stack of coins (I'm assuming) totals the amount of the number its representing is kind of cute. But on the other hand, this is really confusing.

"Perfectly fine ladder fix."

A ladder with zip ties along one side of the frame.
reddit | vaultsavantalex

Yeah, if you see a ladder that has zip ties on any part of it as part of a "fix," run. Or at the very least, don't use the ladder. This is an accident just waiting to happen.

"Birth of an expensive mistake."

An Amazon review for a person who used the tape they bought to hang a TV, accompanied by an image of their TV with tape on the back of it.
reddit | abrakh

Something tells me that TV isn't going to last very long on the wall. I guess some people need to learn lessons the hard way, even if the hard way will also cost you hundreds of dollars.

"Rather than replacing the back door with a dog door, my dad did this. His home is always at a toasty 45 degrees. And btw, he’s renting this place."

A door leading outside. A piece of drywall with a doggy door on the bottom is affixed to the side of the door, preventing it from closing properly.
reddit | ToysNoiz

I'm not gonna lie, this one broke me. I don't get why you would do this, and think it was a clever solution. Replacing the door would probably be more cost effective in the long run.
