I’m Impressed With These Easy Dollar Store Hacks I Tried

Diply 14 Sep 2018

I wouldn't be exaggerating when I say that the dollar store might be one of my favorite places on earth. The fact that I can get pretty much anything for under $4 is definitely right up my alley, especially when you live in one of the most expensive cities in North America and your rent is absurd.

As a craft-loving gal, the dollar store is my first stop when I want to make just about anything. But what about when it comes to trying out some hacks? It seemed like a pretty good place to start!

I'm really excited to show you these dollar store hacks, especially because I actually got to try them out!

Let's just use this gif as an opportunity to show you how ready I am to make some pretty rad things.

Whenever I go to the dollar store, the craft section is always my first stop, even if I'm not actually going there to buy any crafts.

I am aware that I have a crafting problem, a severe one.

That being said, the craft aisle actually came in handy in my search for some fun (and useful!) dollar store hacks.

Load Comments

I basically went down every single aisle, which is not something I do very often. I was on a mission to make my hacks work, gosh darn it!

Luckily, the dollar store had everything I needed and I was able to come up with three hacks that I'm really proud of.

Is there anything more satisfying than finding what you want and ripping it off the shelf?

Oh no? That's just me? Well then, carry on to the next section if you're not down with a gif of me taking some pipe cleaners off the shelf.

Hack #1: The Dinosaur One

Diply | Victoria Stacey

In the DIY and hack world, there is currently a weird theme of people cutting toy dinosaurs in half.

I love this weird trend, and so of course I needed to jump right on the bandwagon.

Using an X-Acto knife, I carefully cut one of my toy dinosaurs in half.

Diply | Victoria Stacey

It was easier than I expected, but please be very careful when trying this. I don't want anyone to lose a finger in pursuit of a sweet dollar store hack!

Oh, and you're going to need one of those suction cup thingys.

Off with its head!

GIPHY

Once you've cut that bad boy in half, toss its head away because you don't need that thing anymore.I mean, I'm sure you can do something with it, but you don't need it now.

This is where that trusty hot glue gun comes in handy!

Ignoring my poor simultaneous gluing and filming skills, add some hot glue to that suction cup thingy so you can stick it in the back of the dinosaur.

And voilà, you've got yourself a dope phone stand and a much better alternative to those pop socket things.

I'm not lying when I say I now have a lineup of people who want these, so go on and try this hack ASAP.

I'm also going to toss this image in here because my colleague was really excited about me using her phone for photos.

And she's a huge Jurassic Park/Jeff Goldblum fan.

Remember when I grabbed that pack of pipe cleaners from the dollar store shelves earlier?

This is probably the hack I was most excited for, because I knew it was actually going to have a huge impact in my life.

Hack #2: The Pipe Cleaner One

Diply | Victoria Stacey

Grab a clothes hanger from your closet (or the dollar store!) and start to wrap one of the pipe cleaners around the end of your hanger.

Load Comments

Once you've coiled it around one side, do the exact same thing on the other side.

Diply | Victoria Stacey

It only takes a few minutes, but it's going to be worth it, I promise!

Hang your clothes on the clothes hanger, and be amazed when your clothes don't fall off!

I put my open sweater on the hanger and tugged, and it stayed put. Hallelujah! I am doing this to every hanger in my closet.

This might accurately depict how I feel about never having to pick my clothes up off the ground again.

I'm stoked and we haven't even covered all of the hacks yet!

Hack #3: The Baking Sheet One

Diply | Victoria Stacey

If you're staring at the screen wondering what I could possibly do with a baking sheet other than bake with it, you need to read the heck on.

Load Comments

You may have forgotten that while a baking sheet can make some tasty AF things, it's also magnetic.

Diply | Victoria Stacey

So, I decided I was going to use that to my advantage.

But first, I measured out some scrapbooking paper that was about the size of the inner part of the baking sheet. This is not necessary, but I like pretty things, okay?!

Load Comments

I added some glue from my trusty hot glue gun and added the paper to it.

Diply | Victoria Stacey

If you haven't quite figured out where I'm going with this hack, I'll give you a hint: It's a magnetic memo board.

Okay, that wasn't a hint. That was the straight-up answer.

And don't tell me adding the scrapbooking paper wasn't worth it, because it was.

Now I've got this cute as heck magnetic memo board for my desk, and it cost me $3.

Hack #4: The Coffee One

Diply | Victoria Stacey

Yesterday I had wayyy too much coffee. We're having a bit of an extended summer and I'm a sucker for a good iced coffee when it's hot out.

Load Comments

And while I might not be particularly picky about what coffee I'm drinking, I hate it when it gets too watered down.

Diply | Victoria Stacey

Luckily, we had a couple of dollar store ice cube trays around the office!

Load Comments

This works really well if you had a hot coffee that went cold, but you don't want to waste it by pouring it down the drain.

GIPHY

Just add your leftover coffee to an ice cube tray!

Load Comments

Then toss it in the freezer and make yourself some tasty coffee cubes for future use.

GIPHY

You can use them in your iced coffee so that the drink isn't diluted, or toss them in the blender with some milk. YUM.

So, how do you feel about these dollar store hacks? Are you as impressed as I am?!
