7 Things That Should Never Go In The Washing Machine, And 7 Things You Might As Well Toss In

Diply 3 Jul 2018

I hate doing the laundry. Seriously, it's one of my least favorite chores.

I hate sorting, washing, drying, drying again, sorting again, and then putting everything away. It's a long process, and I usually just let my boyfriend do it all.

What's even worse is that there are so many rules to doing the laundry. Don't mix whites, don't wash your bras, empty all of your pockets. It's just too much for me.

Luckily for you, I've done all the hard work. Here are some things you should never put in the washing machine, and some things you can totally toss in.

1. DON'T: Bras and Lingerie

Bras are hella expensive, and you don't want those things to get destroyed. They can lose their shape, the hooks and wire can rip other things, and it's basically just one big no.

Get a garment bag if you really need to wash them in the machine, otherwise just use your hands and a sink.

2. DON'T: Loose Coins

If you're like me and always forget to check your pockets before tossing something in the washing machine, STOP.

Coins can get caught in places they shouldn't and can ruin your clothes and your washing machine forever.

3. DO: Sneakers

Sneakers, like Converse and Vans, are made for long periods of wear and therefore can survive a trip through the cycle.

Which is a very good thing because my sneakers are dirty AF after a summer of stompin' around muddy festivals.

4. DON'T: Running Shoes

Unlike sneakers, running shoes are lightweight and can't withstand the rigorous cycles of a washing machine.

These babies are also freaking expensive, so you probably don't want them to shrink, tear, or rip.

5. DO: Yoga Mats

Yoga mats are gross AF. Even if you wipe them down after use, they don't always get as clean as they should.

Well and Good recommends tossing them in the washing machine, and dryer, to keep them hella fresh.

Just like your hair can clog up the tub, your pet's hair can clog up the tubes and drains of the washing machine. This can cause malfunctions and all around not good stuff to happen.

You would think there's nothing wrong with tossing your toddler's socks in the washing machine with the rest of your clothes, but it could be a disaster.

Tiny items can get caught and stuck in parts of the washing machine and cause major problems.

8. DO: Sports Gear

Fun fact: I started learning how to skate and play roller derby this past summer.

Fun fact: My gear really, really stinks.

Luckily for me, my sports gear can actually go right in the laundry. I just have to make sure the Velcro is done up so it won't stick to anything else.

9. DON'T: Car Keys

It might go without saying, but anything that has a battery in it is bad news for your washing machine.

And the keys themselves can rip holes in your clothes, cause scratching on the drumb, cause malfunctions, or even worse, fires.

10. DO: Stuffed Animals

When I was a kid, we all got lice. As a result, my mom had to isolate all of our favorite stuffed animals.

Luckily for her, she was able to toss those bad boys in the washing machine, thus giving her more time to comb through our hair with a fine-tooth comb.

Oh the joys of being a mother.

I would have thought that washing anything with light plastic would be a no-go for the washing machine, but apparently not.

There are actually a few different ways you can use your washing machine to clean the mildew and scum off of your plastic shower curtains.

Did you know that there are certain stains you can't wash in the washing machine?

Anything flammable, like gasoline, should not be washed in your average machine — it could cause a fire or explosion.

Aluminum foil is not just a great way to cover up your tasty leftovers, it's actually pretty freaking useful around the house, too.

Washing every piece of Lego by hand sounds like dying a slow, painful death.

So, instead of painstakingly cleaning each of them individually, toss them all in a garment bag and wash them in your washing machine instead.

BONUS DO: Backpacks

As long as you take off all your rad band pins and your bag isn't bedazzled with 3D butterflies, you can toss your backpack in the washing machine.
