Diply 19 Sep 2018

With the recent release and rollout of iOS 12, iPhone users everywhere are digging into the tasty new features that come with it. Or possibly watching their older phones slow down. Hmmm.

But hey, what a perfect time to point out some of the little nuggets that you can do on an iPhone these days!

1. Tired of searching for songs when you don't know the name and only getting album or song titles, or artist names?

Gadget Hacks reports one pretty incredible feature is the ability to search Apple Music by song lyrics — for when you only know that one bit of the song.

2. Siri's got a couple of new tricks up her sleeve, too.

You can ask questions about food ("how much caffeine is in coffee," a question someone like me should avoid asking or even ask for a reminder on one of your old passwords) and Siri "can access info from the USDA's database," the good folks at Gadget Hacks say — don't worry, it shows up on screen, not over speaker.

3. Security-wise, USB accessories won't be able to use the Lightning port on the iPhone to transfer data after the phone is locked.

This was already a feature, but Gadget Hacks says that now it only takes an hour to lock out USB, instead of seven days.

And...when's the last time you put down your phone for a week?

4. Not quite a feature yet, but coming soon (according to Gizmodo): group FaceTime calls. As in, up to 32 people in the same call.

Which I'm sure is not going to get weird for anybody, right? I'm not sure how I feel about this.

5. In some awesome news for people like me who wear sunglasses a lot, Gadget Hacks showed that you can register a second Face ID with the iPhone X.

This could be you in a hat and scarf, sunglasses, or even another person — no more screaming your passcode across the house when your screen locks in the kitchen while you're cooking dinner together.

I mean, I would never add someone else's face as a second unlock, but I can see how it might be useful.

I'd add the dog's face so that she can bring me the phone already unlocked.I'm a genius.

6. Gadget Hacks also explained how photos are gonna start suggesting effects and filters that look good, which hopefully will make pics really pop.

Or in my case, make sure my selfies are as glossy and airbrushed as possible.

7. Speaking of photos, they mentioned that if you take your pics with a better camera and just want to load them into your iPhone, the import process is way better in iOS.

Little tweaks, not too flashy but very requested among users? Those are the best OS updates, in my opinion.

Honestly, the ability to track your own habits and get a drill down of what's productive time and what's not? Great idea.

It's pretty much worth the guilt.

9. Also from Gizmodo: I always have to find out about the latest updates and then grab them. I never know about them beforehand. Sup, automatic updates.

10. One feature Gadget Hacks included that I think is really cool is the ability to set Do Not Disturb for a location, not just a time limit.

Which makes total sense — especially for locations like movie theaters, libraries, bedrooms... All those spots that could use a little peace and quiet.

11. With the ability to measure anything using augmented reality, it's not surprising that we are immediately starting with cats.

I mean come on, it's the internet. Of course we are.

12. If you're like me, you are one of the terrible people who re-uses the same passwords, over and over.

Well, Gadget Hacks says that now you can fix them on the fly, or just have access to the master list of your passwords if you want proof of how unoriginal you are.

With all these new tricks and features, I figure that a lot of us are going to be buried in our phones a bit more than usual.

For a while...like, until we run out of stuff to measure.
