20+ Random Lifehacks That Get Us Through The Day

Diply 26 Sep 2018

While I'd love some sort of fancy hack that would solve all of the world's problems, mostly I'm just looking for ways to make getting through the day a little bit easier.

I want iced coffee that isn't watered down, my laptop to not overheat and die before I can save my work, and to be able to open a damn beer in the evening.

That's what these hacks are. They won't solve climate change, but they may make the world a little less annoying.

1. Remove labels from containers with a baking soda soak.

Instructables | MakerQueen

There's no need to buy some Goo Gone. Find a container a bit larger than the one with the label and fill it with hot water. Mix in a tablespoon of baking soda per cup of water and then submerge the label. Leave for 15-30 minutes and it'll come right off.

2. Make sure you don't miss a dose by adding a chart to your pill bottle.

I take my daily meds first thing in the morning during the pre-coffee zombie trudge out to the car. If anything messes with the routine, I often can't remember if I took them or not. A simple chart like this and a pencil would help with that a lot.

3. Use the tab to keep a straw stable in a can of pop.

Instructables | ReelHeat

Something about fizzy drinks and aluminum cans seems to repel plastic straws. It's probably because of science or something.

Keep that straw down in the can by sliding it through the tab.

4. Look under the stem to see if an avocado is too ripe.

If the stem comes off easily and you see green, then it's perfect for eating. If it doesn't come off at all, then the fruit isn't ripe yet. If you find brown under the stem, then it's overly ripe and probably pretty gross.

Knowing this trick could save you a bit of money by cutting down on waste.

5. Line a box with a garbage bag for a makeshift cooler.

Maybe you forgot your cooler or there are more drinks than you expected, but that doesn't mean you have to be stuck with a warm beverage. After the party, you can pour away the melted ice and reuse the garbage bag during party clean-up.

6. Get every last breathe of air out of a bag with a straw.

Instructables | ReelHeat

Air is the enemy of food, whether it's in the pantry, fridge, or freezer. So, when you're putting things in zip-top bags for long-term storage, close it up until there is only enough room to slide in a straw and suck out any remaining air before finishing the seal.

7. Use a plastic utensil to lock a broken stall door.

When you've got to go, you've got to go, even if the only stall is missing a latch. A plastic utensil will keep the door from swinging open on you, though it won't solve the gap problem.

Really, any object long enough to reach can work.

8. Reheat multiple bowls by elevating one of them.

Just use a mug or a glass to prop up the second bowl. That way everyone can get their food at the same time instead of staggered.

9. Stop forgetting your lunch by attaching it to your bag.

This might be a step too far for some, but if you chronically forget your lunch, this could be the trick you need to break that habit. Tie your bag or purse to the lunch bag with a long cord or string and close the fridge door on it. When you pick up your bag, you'll have to take your lunch, too.

10. Keep larger drink bottles stable in the car by inverting them into the cup holder.

Reddit | LiquidHate

This trick will prevent your bottle from rolling away out of your reach while you drive. Just make sure the cap is on tightly.

11. Save the clips from store hangers and you'll never need to buy chip clips again.

Instructables | helacaster

These clips will probably hold a lot better than those crappy ones sold in the grocery check-out lane anyway.

12. Dip your fries on the go by tearing the whole end off the ketchup packet.

Reddit | heartdropsdaily

This is far less messy and you aren't forced to eat naked fries just because you're in the car.

13. Keep wires off the floor with a cheap basket and hooks.

No need to buy a special cord organization system. Screw some hooks into the underside of your desk (or use Command Hooks) and hang a wire basket from them.

14. Keep treats for later with a paperclip.

Reddit | marandabradley4

Small boxes of candy don't tend to have a tab for holding the box closed, but you may not want to eat the whole box at once. So, use a paperclip to hold the flaps down.

15. Get grease stains out of clothing with antacids.

Instructables | ButterMyBiscuits

The calcium carbonate in antacids is great at absorbing fat and grease. Grind up a couple of tablets and rub the powder into the stain. After a couple of hours of letting it sit, wash the shirt as normal.

16. Reheat leftovers more evenly by adding a hole in the middle.

Microwaves tend to leave the centers of things cold, so why not make things easier for them? By clearing space in the center, you increase the surface area and the microwaves can more evenly penetrate the food.

17. If you walk with groceries, use a sturdy scarf as a sling.

Instructables | HelenaTroy

Evenly distribute the weight on either end of the scarf and you'll be able to carry things a lot easier than before. Just make sure the scarf is a strong one.

18. Easily add candy sprinkles to anything by putting hardy candy in a pepper grinder.

Imgur | Kamonart

I love this so much. I like the flavors of Nerds or other candies on my ice cream, but cold, hard candy doesn't make my teeth happy. Plus, this way the flavor is easier to distribute throughout.

19. No kettle? No problem. Use a coffee maker for hot water.

Imgur | Gobobo

Not every office provides a kettle, but sometimes you just want hot water. If you don't put a pod in the coffee machine, it'll give you hot water. This also works in a hotel room.

Freeze a bunch before the party and your guests can enjoy chilled wine without watering it down. Once melted, the cube just acts as a partial refill.

Coffee frozen in ice cube trays is perfect for a summer brew without losing flavor or diluting the amount of caffeine.

22. Use a trivet to prop up your laptop and keep it cool.

Reddit | bellevis

There's no need to buy a dedicated laptop riser. You can also use a cooling rack for this. Anything that will allow plenty of airflow will work.

23. Open a bottle with folded paper.

Paper is such a cool thing. It seems flimsy, but a few folds makes it strong enough to be a bottle opener in a pinch.

24. Get the perfect bite of a cupcake every time.

Eating a cupcake usually involves a face full of frosting followed by plain cake. Don't do that to yourself. Instead, twist the top off of the cupcake and flip it to make an icing sandwich.
