26 Things Nobody Tells You About Wearing A Menstrual Cup

Diply 26 Jul 2017

Before we begin, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Avery. I'm 25 years old and my proudest moment in life is the time Taylor Swift liked a picture of me on Tumblr.

Now that you know me on a personal level, I feel like we can have an open conversation about all the disgusting glory of using a menstrual cup. Shall we?

For the uniformed, the menstrual cup is just another feminine hygiene product girls can use instead of tampons or pads.

The cup literally just collects your blood instead of absorbing it.

I only started using the DivaCup less than a year ago thanks to two pushy coworkers who preached it to me like it was God's gift to women.

They told me it would solve all my period problems — so I gave it a shot.

Honestly, I can't thank them enough for the recommendation.

I will say, however, that no matter how awesome the cup is, there are a lot of things about it that people don't warn you about.

1. You have to be really comfortable with your body if you want to use a cup.

If even tampons make you kind of uncomfortable, you want to think long and hard about switching to the cup.

2. You will definitely get messy and totally covered in blood at one point.

The cup has so many wonderful benefits, but clean hands are generally not one of them, so be ready for that.

3. There's a chance you might lose your cup inside yourself.

After recommending the cup to a dear, sweet friend of mine, I was later flooded with worried texts after she couldn't find it.

4. If you do end up losing it, don't worry, you will find it.

Your uterus is not a mysterious black hole. Relax, it's in there somewhere. Let gravity do its work.

5. Your hands aren't the only thing that will get messy.

If you lose control of the cup, even for a moment, you might find your walls covered in red splatter. I'm so sorry.

6. Putting it in the first few times (or even longer) might be uncomfortable.

For me, it's never actually been painful, but everyone is different. Its a weird object to get used to, and it just takes time.

7. You might think you have it in right, but then you'll walk around and realize you definitely do not.

Trust me, you'll know when it's in right because you won't be able to feel a thing.

8. You won't trust it at first.

You'll fully expect for it to just tip while you're walking. Please believe me, that doesn't happen — if it did, people wouldn't be praising the cups as much as they do.

9. You'll realize you bleed much less than you thought.

The cool thing about the cup is that it shows you just how much you bleed on your period. Most people are genuinely shocked at how little blood there is.

10. The cup might actually give you lighter periods altogether.

I don't know how it works, but I can attest to this. It's been the most wonderful part of the experience so far.

11. You'll accidentally leave it laying out in the bathroom for someone else to find.

It's easy to forget if you've cleaned it and are leaving it out to dry.

What better way to educate your family and friends on the beauty of feminine hygiene products?

12. You'll enjoy the freedom of not having to subtly carry a pad or a tampon to the public bathroom.

I have such an appreciation for this now. Plus, you hardly ever worry about leaking. It's just so much better.

13. Sometimes it just doesn't go your way.

But that's okay! It's all about trial and error. This is a modern menstrual miracle, and we deserve a little credit for exploring the previously unexplored.

14. No more worrying about running out of lady supplies.

This results in you not having to beg randoms in the public washroom for sweet mercy on your soul.

Depending on others is not how this diva rolls.

Us ladies can all agree that is literally the most stressful feeling ever.

While your life is flashing before your eyes, you wonder what supplies you can use to handcraft a tampon.

15. You'll feel trendy and hip with your modern take on menstruation.

Menstrual cups are basically trending news. Why not hop on the bandwagon and give Aunt Flo a hell no?

16. A major downside, however, is that it does not fit up your nostril She's The Man style.

0/10 do not recommend trying. This party trick could result in a lot of therapy.

17. You won't always be able to take the "you" time to put it in.

Sometimes, you'll have to empty the cup at da club while Beyoncé pulsates through the stall...such is life.

18. Sleeping is a lot more comfy.

Sleeping with bulky nighttime pads can feel super uncomfortable. These little cups hold way more liquid, letting you sleep easier at the time you need it the most.

19. And since they hold more fluid than a pad or tampon, they're almost leak-proof!

Which means you can still wear your cute panties with hardly any fear of stains!

Bye bye, period granny panties!

20. That being said, your cup just might runneth over.

It might feel like a cruel joke, but it's gotta happen at some point. It serves as a good reminder for how long these little cups actually last!

21. But if you trust it, you've got a friend for life.

We all can relate to the amazing feeling of wanting to find something that makes us feel secure during our most painful time of the month.

22. If you love the cup, you'll find yourself preaching it to all your friends.

They'll all be weirded out a first, but you're convinced that they'll grow to love it just like you did.

23. You'll hear that boiling your cup is the best way to disinfect it.

It sounds weird, but it's a great way to make sure you're staying clean, so don't knock it until you try it.

24. You'll be so frustrated trying to put the cup in right that you'll give up and just use a tampon.

Instagram | @thedivacup

It'll feel like a walk down memory lane, but then you remember it has that weird string and eventually switch back to the cup if it's meant to be.

25. You'll feel really good about saving a bunch of money each month and doing your part to help the environment.

In the end, you're basically a frugal Superwoman. You go, girl.

26. You might fall in love with it or you might realize it's just not for you, and that is perfectly fine. Do what works best for you.
