I hope you're not looking for a particular hack with this article, because specificity is not the name of the game here. The only thing these particular hacks have in common is that I saw them and thought, "Huh. That's handy."

That's what a lifehack is, after all; a random tip that solves a random problem that's both oddly specific and completely generic.

1. Use dryer sheets to clean bug goo off your car.

See? Oddly specific, and yet a problem many people have. Those squashed bugs are a special kind of sticky that doesn't want to come off quickly. A dryer sheet will get them off, though.

2. Use a lint roller to clean a lampshade.

Trying to dust a lampshade is a lesson in futility. It's either trapped in the fibers or just settles right back down moments later. Teach it a lesson by swapping the duster for a lint roller.

This one also uses a bottle cap to add extra bulk. Put it on masking tape so that it's easy to reposition when needed. The doorknob will bump the glue instead of banging against the wall.

4. Use a fabric baby gate for awkward stairs.

The DIY Playbook has a great tutorial for making this no-sew fabric gate. A couple of cable ties or Command Hooks make it easy to install and remove. Perfect for keeping kids and pets from climbing the stairs.

The donut is stale because its moisture has evaporated, so you can resurrect it the same way. Set it over your coffee for a couple of minutes and the steam will soften it right up.

6. Use S-hooks to hang baskets in the closet.

This is a great way to make the most of a storage closet. The baskets can hold things like socks or cleaning cloths, keeping them neat and tidy.

7. Get a streak-free shine with newspaper.

After spraying and washing your windows with a soft cloth, give them a final dry and buff with crumpled newspaper. It'll leave the glass shining.

As an added bonus, your coworkers will think you have some amazing special access when you simply wave your phone to unlock the door.

9. Use a clean paint brush to dust blinds.

By sandwiching the slats between the bristles, you'll be dusting both sides at once. If you use a wider brush, you can even do three or more slats at the same time.

If your textbooks are digital or you're assigned a long article to read, many browsers have text-to-speech built right in. This way, you can have the information read to you while you work on other things.

There are also free websites you can paste text into if your browser doesn't do it natively.

The flour will soak up the moisture and clump up, making it much easier to scoop up the mess and will save you from needing so many paper towels.

12. Restore rusty knives with lemon juice.

Soak the rusty knives in lemon juice for a few minutes before wiping them down. They'll be good as new, and as long as you don't leave them in the bottom of the sink again, the rust is gone for good.

13. Keep your plants watered with a bucket and rope.

Going on vacation? Fill a bucket with water and submerge the end of a rope into it. Then put the other end of the rope in the dirt with your plant. Capillary action will lead the water from the bucket to the pot. Natural fiber ropes are best for this.

Use your bags and coolers to hold the sides up and you'll have a mostly sand-free space to enjoy a good book. It's great for toddlers who you don't want eating sand or wandering off, too.

16. Use bobby pins to organize your ties.

The bobby pin will keep a tie hung over a bar or slat from slipping off. Just avoid doing this with silk ties, as the pins may leave a crease that can't be ironed out.

I get why hotels make you continuously press the button for the hairdryer to work, but that doesn't mean my hand doesn't get tired. This Reddit user solved the problem with a scrunchy.

When the hooks or string that came with the bauble eventually get lost, an unfolded paperclip will work just as well to keep it on the tree.

When I moved, I could not give up my old pizza joint, so this would work great for me. The foil cover works just like the warmer bags used by delivery drivers.

22. Use a cutlery tray to organize family toothbrushes.

This way each family member's toothbrush is clearly labelled and it's quick and easy to rinse the tray out when it gets dirty.

23. Keep the fridge door closed with Command Hooks and a rubber bracelet.

You could use a rubber band, too. This is good for homes that occasionally need basic childproofing or for fridge doors that don't want to stay closed.

24. Put some hot glue on your hangers to keep clothing from slipping off.

Five minutes of work and this hack will mean you won't need to pick up sweaters and tank tops off the closet floor every morning.
