Get Through The Day With 18+ Clever Lifehacks

Diply 5 Oct 2018

I'm having one of those weeks where everything just feels like a lot of work. Sure, I've spent the time to make my environment fit my optimal level of laziness — telling my Amazon Echo to turn on and off the heat without having to leave my bed is glorious — but I'm always looking for more hacks.

1. If you're out of clips, a pen can hold closed your chips.

Reddit | RealPinchersKorean

(I won't rhyme for every hack, but I'm on my third cup of coffee, so no promises.)

Use the pen clip to hold the package closed until you can get more bag clips or eat some of the foods using the other ones. A binder clip also works great if you have one.

2. Give your dull scissors more life by cutting through some foil.

Crafty | Diply

This isn't a long-term solution for old, dull scissors, but if you need to get some more cuts out of them before you have the time or money to properly sharpen them (or replace them), this will get the job done.

3. Foil also makes scrubbing cast iron easier.

Wondermom Wannabe | Wondermom Wannabe

Soap is the enemy of cast iron, so you can't just use the same scrubber as the rest of your dishes. Properly seasoned, your cast iron shouldn't have too much stubborn grime, but when it does, a ball of foil will do the job.

4. Use shower curtain rings on a hanger for tank tops.

Reddit | kvnmahan

They'll take up less room and won't slip off the hangers constantly. This trick's also great for scarves, belts, leggings, or bags. If having to unclip the ring every time bugs you, S hooks would be good too.

5. Keep baby wipes handy for cleaning dirty paws.

I don't want to have to bathe my dogs every time they wander to a random puddle or some light mud. A package of baby wipes by the door will get rid of the mess before they track it through the house.

6. Use Press'n Seal to hold wrapping paper tightly.

I'm sure you've tried using a piece of tape to hold a roll closed, but I'm sure you've also run into the problem of the tape ripping the paper. Instead, wrap the roll in Press'n Seal before storing away.

7. Can't find a funnel? Use a screwdriver.

Reddit | thetechhunter

This works particularly well with engine oil, since the thick liquid clings to the screwdriver and rides it right down into the reservoir.

8. Make a DIY hair trap for your drain with a visit to the fiber arts section.

Reddit | skreeth

Hobbies like hooking rugs use plastic mesh as the base. It's cheap and flexible and will capture hair really effectively. Cut a piece the height of your drain and roll it up so it wraps around the drain.

9. When using cooking spray, hold your tray over the open dishwasher.

Reddit | Sway_All_Day

Any splatter will be washed away in the next cycle. If you don't have a dishwasher, you can do it over an empty sink, but you'll have to do the wipe-down yourself, sadly.

10. Use an ice cube tray as a kids' paint palette.

This will allow you to control how much paint they have access to, and the deep wells will contain a lot of the mess if you don't fill them very much.

11. Hard "boil" eggs in the oven.

This takes longer than a pot of water, but it adds the convenience of larger batches without having to babysit the water. Check out the full instructions over at A Beautiful Mess.

12. Make a larger garbage can with an upturned stool.

Reddit | tslab

If you're doing a big project or clean-up, it can be a pain to have the garbage bag close on you. Sure, a friend could hold it open, but if you use this trick, then you have an extra set of hands for the rest.

13. Get cool macro shots with your phone camera.

Crafty | Diply

I love playing with macro photography, but I'm not going to spend the money on a fancy lens for a sometimes-thing. Luckily, you can get the look with your phone and a dollar store laser pointer.

Dismantle the laser pointer to get at the lens inside.

Crafty | Diply

A bobby pin will grasp the lens snugly and then all you need is to center it over the camera on your phone and use a piece of tape to hold it in place.

14. Stop fumbling with cables by marking which side is up.

Reddit | ciprock

Especially those USB plugs that you never get right on the first try. If you also fumble to find the right port, you can take it a step further and mark your laptop to match.

15. Get perfect poached eggs with silicone baking cups.

The cups will keep the eggs contained while they cook and because they're silicone, they'll peel off the eggs easily when serving.

16. Catch mice humanely with a makeshift trap.

Reddit | fluffinatorfluffins

I have a problem with mice and skunks jumping down from my porch only to get trapped in my garbage bins, but this hack sees the problem as an advantage. Put some food in the bottom of a tall bin and then place it beside something the mice can use as a ramp.

They can get in but will be stuck until you relocate them.

17. Use Press'n Seal to hold recipe cards where you can see them.

It's transparent enough that you can still read the text, and you won't end up with sticky fingerprints all over the card.

18. If your laptop charger won't stay plugged in, add some velcro.

Reddit | siddv

Glue a washer around the base of the cord to make a place for the velcro, then add a matching velcro patch around the laptop port.

19. Use a Lego man to keep your cords where you can find them.

There are a few ways to keep your cords from falling behind desks and sofas, but this is by far the cutest.

20. Hang a frame perfectly the first time with some washi tape.

Modish And Main | Modish And Main

I'm definitely saving this trick from Modish and Main. Stretch a strip of tape along the back of your frame, covering all the hanging holes.

Mark the tape over the holes and then transfer the tape to the wall.

Modish And Main | Modish And Main

Just drill or nail right over the mark and then peel the tape away. Washi tape is perfect for this because it peels up cleanly.

21. Use a rope to steady your camera without a tripod.

Crafty | Diply

Find a rope at least twice your height and tie a screw to one end that fits into the tripod mount for your camera. By stretching the rope down under your feet and back up to your other hand, you'll create a steady shot.

22. Temporarily repair cracked plastic frames.

Reddit | beardedwazoon

Plastic frames are lightweight and come in more styles than metal frames, but they can also crack more easily. This person drilled two tiny holes and used a bit of cord to tie the broken parts together.
