Diply 17 Oct 2018

Our scars tell a story about who we are, what we have survived, and who we have become. Not everybody is going to deal with their scars by shining a spotlight on them, and we'd never criticize anyone for being private. But, we can still celebrate when celebs decide to embrace their scars and share their stories with us.

When Padma Lakshmi was 14, her budding modeling career was interrupted when a car accident shattered her right arm and left her with a 7-inch scar. Initially self-conscious about it, the Top Chef star sought treatments to lighten the scar, but she eventually accepted it as part of who she is.

In 2001, she wrote an essay about her scar for Vogue: "I love my scar. It is so much a part of me. I'm not sure I would remove it even if a doctor could wave a magic wand and delete it from my arm. The scar has singled me out and made me who I am."

The accident that caused the scar on Jonah Hill's arm was a turning point in his life. When the actor was 15, Hill was riding with his elbow out the window of an SUV when his friend's reckless driving caused the vehicle to flip over.

Waking up in the hospital, hearing doctors discussing whether to amputate his arm, and seeing the look on his parents' faces was enough to make Hill decide to make a change.

He told Rolling Stone, "I said to myself, 'I’ll never let them down ever again.' I said, 'I’m going to be f***in’ successful. I’m going to resurrect what I put these people through by being a little a**hole.' So I look at this scar every day. That reminds me to work hard."

Tina Fey's facial scar is one that the actress kept notably silent about for the first few years of her fame. She told Vanity Fair (via People), that she didn't want to glorify or exploit the scar. He spoke with Jet (by way of News.com.au) about people's fascination with his face, and their desire to mythologize his scars, saying "People want the scars to be tribal scars. That's just the nature of the media and of people's imaginations."

Seal has even played around with some of the more ridiculous rumors. In the movie Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, he plays himself, fending off a pack of wolves, saying "I've been in this situation before. Where do you think I've got these scars?"
