The Captain Marvel 'Smile More' Clapbacks Are Pure Cosmic Comedy

Diply 4 Oct 2018

It's fair to say that the internet is pretty stoked for Captain MarvelScreenrant reports that the trailer had more than 109 million views in its first 24 hours on YouTube.

But, as usual, there were some people who couldn't just be cool about it. You know how some dudes just can't let a woman be without insisting she smile?

Well, apparently even superheroes aren't invulnerable to that brand of sexism.

So of course, it only makes sense that someone would have a huge problem with a tough-as-nails superhero who doesn't smile.

Oh yes, now her face perfectly matches the other members of her interstellar ass-kicking squad.

I know when I think of cosmic alien commando teams, I think, "But bruh, they're not smiling enough."

Record scratch Yeah, that's me. I bet you're wondering how I ended up like this. Actually, I'm having a great day. It's my birthday.

Somehow, I think that's a little less exciting for a big-budget movie.

And I mean...it's a dang trailer. It's literally two minutes.

Twitter | @TFMonkeyYouTube

Like, dude, can't you handle it when a woman doesn't smile for two whole minutes?

It really sucks that there are men who see a trailer as mind-blowing as the Captain Marvel one and only think about whether Brie Larsen is smiling or not.

Speaking for myself, as soon as the music started I was having a hard time thinking anything negative at all.

By the way, the song is called "Luminous and Unstoppable," and it's an absolute banger. I've basically had it on repeat for days.

Oh, and in case you were wondering: Captain Marvel does smile in the trailer.

It just happens, you know, when she feels like it, instead of when a bunch of dudes think she should.

Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU (the Netflix one, anyway), actually touched on the whole "smile more" thing.

Oh, and for the record, there's nothing creepier than somebody smiling when they don't want to.

So some fans have decided to have a little fun with it by adding smiles to some other Marvel heroes.

Oh look, here's Thor if he was doing a bad Austin Powers impersonation.

Load Comments

I mean, it's just...goofy. Can someone find out if this is what Chris Evans actually looks like when he smiles?

Twitter | @davidchensky

I mean, I would, but I'm kinda scared to find out.

Brie Larsen even shared screenshots from her Instagram, and she found some really good ones.

OK, I've been thinking this one's more normal, but that might be because I've been thinking of all these teeth as supernatural. Is that mean?

It's still weird to see. I don't know if I've ever seen Brinkledart Crunchysplat even crack a smile before today.

Sorry, thatsounds wrong...I think his name is actually Branderstotch Crumbypants. That's my bad.

It got even better when some non-Marvel heroes dropped in.

Twitter | @funnyordie

Yeah, I dunno if Batman or Superman smiled during the entire runtime of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. And we didn't need Rotten Tomatoes to know how well that turned out.

All things considered, fake smiles can look a lot worse. Remember Henry Cavill's mustache that Warner Bros. tried to get rid of with CGI for Justice League?

YouTube | We Got This Covered

Oof. GeekTyrant accurately described it as "THE WORST."

And you know what really sucks? These guys are now dictating whether Captain Marvel can smile at all, apparently.

Twitter | @Khallion

Or at least, other people got upset enough that they decided it's not cool for Captain Marvel to smile, ever, because of this whole thing.

There's a lot of stuff in this world worth getting upset over, but movie trailers mass-produced by giant media corporations probably doesn't need to be one of them.

I mean...probably.Still, the music is sweet.
