'Avengers' Fan Theory: Nick Fury Knew About Thanos All Along

Diply 29 Oct 2018

If there's one thing we enjoy more than watching Marvel movies, it's talking about them. In the gap between Avengers: Infinity War and the still-untitled Avengers 4, we've been poring over every leak and fan theory, hoping for a peek at what's to come in the franchise.

We've written at length about the different heroes who might end up being the one to save the day and undo Thanos' destructive snap at the end of Infinity War.

Would it be Rocket Raccoon, or Loki, or even the Mind Stone itself?

But there's one character who rarely ever shows up in these conversations.

He's always been in the background, pulling the strings and keeping everything moving along. So why don't we talk more about the role that Nick Fury will have in taking down Thanos?

Well, there's definitely that whole part where we saw him get snapped up in the post-credit scene of Infinity War, but, I mean, besides that.

I'm being a bit sarcastic, but seriously, this theory from sfmarch07 on Reddit has us believing that there's more to Nick Fury than meets the eye.

The theory suggests that either in Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, or both, it will be revealed that Nick Fury has known about basically all of this since the beginning.

Let's start with Captain Marvel in the 1990s.

In Infinity War, we saw Doctor Strange reveal that out of 14,000,605 possible outcomes, there was only one that would see Thanos actually defeated.

In order for whatever this plan was to come to pass, events would have to be planned out on an incredibly micro level.

First things first — Doctor Strange would have to go back in time, as the Time Stone would have allowed him to do, and put somebody in charge of making the plan happen.

That somebody according to this theory is Colonel Nick Fury.

Hardly ever at the forefront of the MCU's storylines, Nick Fury has mainly stood in the background, helping weave together the narrative that we're all watching.

Whether it's in his post-credit recruitment scenes or in Age of Ultron, where he nudges the Avengers toward building Vision, Fury has always seemed to know more than everyone else.

And maybe that's because he does.

The theory doesn't explain exactly when Doctor Strange would have met up with Nick Fury, but it stands to reason it would be before or around the events of Captain Marvel.

In the Captain Marvel trailer, we hear Fury say "truth be told, I was ready to hang it up until I met you today."

If sfmarch07 is right, then Fury isn't talking to Captain Marvel at all. He's talking to Doctor Strange, and that meeting is the reason that he decided to become the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and form the Avengers Initiative.

According to the theory, the time travel bits of this theory will be revealed in Avengers 4, detailing how pretty much everything that has happened so far in the MCU has been planned out by Strange and Fury.

Time travel stories always get tricky and complicated, but the theory figures that they'll be able to show enough of a cause-and-effect of Strange and Fury's plan that it'll answer all of the superficial questions.

And speaking of the Avengers Initiative, sfmarch07 adds one more heartbreaking detail to the theory.

While it could be true regardless of Fury's involvement, the theory explains Tony Stark's role in saving the day.

One popular fan theory says that the Avengers will use time travel in some way or another to collect all of the Infinity Stones.

That's easy enough to understand, but this new twist focuses on the Soul Stone.

According tosfmarch07, Tony Stark will be the one responsible for collecting the Soul Stone.

In order to get the Soul Stone, a sacrifice needs to be made. The immediate thought is that Stark might sacrifice Pepper Potts, but what if, through time travel logic, he ends up sacrificing his own parents?

This new twist suggests that Tony Stark will end up being the one who to takes the hit out on his own parents, as we saw in Civil War.

It's a choice that would doom Stark to the life of emptiness and misery we've seen all along, but it's definitely the kind of sacrifice that would earn you the Soul Stone.

So what do you think? Is Nick Fury going to be revealed to be the thread that pulls the whole world back together? And what about that tragic Tony Stark theory? Be sure to let us know!
