Ashley Graham Subtly Shaded Kendall Jenner's Modeling Drama

Diply 19 Oct 2018

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another episode of Rich People Drama, where we take a look at those more financially and beautifully fortunate than us and pretend that their actions really make a difference in our day-to-day lives.

Today, we're going to be talking about Ashley Graham and how she threw some subtle shade at Kendall Jenner. Let's begin.

First, a bit of background on the savagely honest queen of the hour.

This is supermodel Ashley Graham. She's made a huge impact on the plus-size modeling industry — well, the industry in general TBH — and is overall just a confident queen we can't stop obsessing over.

I mean, come on.

You're looking at the first plus-size woman to land the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. That's so impressive if you've seen the body-types typically showcased on their covers.

In the past, she's been known for not hesitating to put the haters in their place.

She's not afraid to respond to the trolls on social media who criticize her for the way she looks.

Like the time someone assumed something in the comments on a video of her panning her smokin' bod.

In real life, it's never polite to assume someone is pregnant without them explicitly telling you. It's even worse to comment it on social media.

Then there was the time that she posted a photo of herself and someone had the audacity to imply that she doesn't work out.

But of course, she didn't let that comment go unnoticed.

Anyway, she's sassy and we love her for it. You get the picture.

And then we have Kendall Jenner.

We all know that Kendall grew up appearing on her family's show, "Keeping up with the Kardashians".

And from there, she basically became a runway model overnight.

Or so it seemed.

Before we knew it, she was strutting down the Victoria's Secret runway, and ruling any and all fashion weeks.

And I'm not here to bash the girl. Modeling is hard work, and it's great that she's out there making her own money.

But with her growing fame came high-profile controversies galore, and they only seem to get worse as time goes on.

Remember that Pepsi ad that was probably the worst received ad they've run in years?

Or maybe the more recent run-in with cultural appropriation accusations.

While stylistically, she didn't have control over the shoot, she should be well aware of the potential backlash of an afro-like hairstyle on herself.

The problem is that back in August, she made a comment that upset a very large part of the modeling industry.

Kendall was interviewing with Love Magazine, and they shared an excerpt from the interview on their Instagram.

She had spoken about how since the start of her modeling career, she was selective of which shows she chose to do.

Instagram | @kendalljenner

Cringe, right?

"I was never one of those girls who would do like 30 shows a season or whatever the [expletive] those girls do," she said.

Hmm—not working as much as other models? Weird flex, but okay.

"More power to 'em. But I had a million jobs, not only catwalks but everything else."

"The whole combination was very overwhelming and I started to freak out a little bit and needed to take a step back," she added.

Her comments seriously offended other models who work hard to be successful and can't be choosy about which shows they work.

Ukrainian model Julia Ratner didn't hold back how she felt about the quote.

Theodora Quinlivan also responded with a lengthy, woke post to her Insta story.

She explains how many models don't come from money, rather the opposite — and that they work hard to raise themselves out of their personal struggles.

Anyway, Ashley recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live, and a fan called in to ask what her thoughts were on the whole thing.

After a very dramatic hair flip, Ashley responded with, "well, lucky for her."

It was jam packed with a spicy combination of shady and sassy undertones, and it was amazing.

"Cause I've never been...that's so lucky," she trailed off, implying that she's never been able to be choosy about what shows she does.

She added that as a plus-size model, her body "has had to fight through and break down barriers every day," which was met with a roaring applause from the audience.

I'm not going to lie, I thought the two were friends? Maybe they still are, but a comment like this doesn't sound very BFF to me, so what do I know.

Afterall, if you watch "Keeping Up With The Kardashians", you see the family roast each other all the time.

Instagram | @kendalljenner

But at the end of the day, they're still family.

So I have a feeling that Kendall can handle Ashley's comment.

At the end of September, Supermodel Naomi Campbell was also asked about her thoughts on this drama while on Watch What Happens Live.

And her reaction was also full of shade.

Andy Cohen asked Naomi her thoughts, and she simply pursed her lips, looked directly into the camera, and said "next question" in the sassiest tone you could imagine.

So, it's pretty safe to say that the modeling industry wasn't, and still isn't, impressed with Kendall's comments.

Although she did address the situation on Twitter, and said that her quote was taken out of context, so we'll give her that.

Instagram | @kendalljenner
Load Comments

"I was misrepresented in a recent interview over the wknd & it’s important to clarify the meaning."

Instagram | @kendalljenner
Load Comments

"It was intended to be entirely complimentary but unfortunately, my words were twisted & taken out of context."

Instagram | @kendalljenner

She continued, "I want to be clear. The respect that I have for my peers is immeasurable!"

Load Comments

So, yeah — while Kenny is busy with "a million jobs," MAYBE she shouldn't knock the hustle of other models.

Not everyone was awarded the same privileges as her — in fact, a lot of models come from drastically different backgrounds — and that's something to admire, not attack.
