4+ Clever Last Minute DIY Costumes Using Dollar Store Stuff

Diply 18 Oct 2018

I'm not sure about you, but where I live, Halloween festivities have already started and EVERYONE is talking about their costumes.

But, I know Halloween isn't everyone's cuppa tea, and a lot of people decide last minute to get involved in whatever drunken activities their best buds are up to.

However, that doesn't mean you need to spend a fortune to participate. Heck, you barely have to put in any effort and you can have a pretty clever and fun costume.

I went to the dollar store and picked up the stuff to make ALL of these costumes for less than $15. Plus, I actually got enough stuff to make another two costumes, but they didn't turn out quite as well as I'd have liked (I got lazy, five Halloween costumes is four too many).

Grapes Of Wrath

I lied, this costume isn't actually grapes of wrath, it's just grapes.Well, the wrath comes into play when you blow up 20+ balloons and no one in the office offers to help. Oh, and when they move all over the place when you try and stick them to one another.

Anyway, as you can probably tell, the first step to this DIY costume is blowing up your balloons.

There really isn't much to this photo other than I thought you might click on it if you saw it on Facebook. I was right, wasn't I?

You're going to want to blow the balloons up to different sizes, because what bunch of grapes are all the same size?

Side note: My colleague cannot tie or blow up balloons due to a latex allergy, so whenever she helps me she uses a balloon pump and makes me tie them. It's a thoughtful gesture, but it's still a lot of work.

Anyway, after all that wrath, I'm actually pretty happy with the outcome.

I used double-sided tape to keep them together, which worked pretty well, but you need to take your time to make sure they stick together if you want a costume that will last all night.

I also made a cute little headband with some leaves, but I'm not actually sure if grapes have leaves... All the costumes on the internet had them, so I just copied it.

Cactus & Flower

Alrighty, on to the next costume, which is actually super fun and easy to do. This wasn't my first time making this cactus costume, but I did tweak the way I did it just a bit.

First off all, I grabbed a pack of felt from the dollar store for $4, which actually ended up being used in most of these DIYs.

I used a bunch of cutout circles and played around with glue and pipe cleaners until I got a shape I was happy with. Then, I attached it to a headband!

Then I moved on to the white felt, which I used to cut out a bunch of rectangles.

The rectangles are going to be the prickly parts of the cactus! Last time I did this in green and black, but I wanted to try with white to make them pop.

And now here is a fun GIF of me throwing them, just because.

Let me tell you, the clean up for these costumes has not been fun. I still haven't finished.

Now that we've got our flower headband figured out and I've got a bunch of white felt rectangles, we will assemble!

I used double-sided tape again for this because I wore a green dress I didn't want to glue anything to.

I strategically (aka randomly) placed the rectangles all over the dress.

They actually stayed on surprisingly well! I think if I were to do this again (third time's a charm), I'd go for a sweater so my arms were covered.

Shredded Banksy Print

Diply | Victoria Stacey

This might actually be my favorite (and most topical) costume of all the ones I made. I'm actually going to wear this one to a party this year!

Load Comments

I used a photo of the print to roughly draw out what the artwork looked like, but you could trace or print the design from online.

You could also use paint, but I didn't want to get things too messy so I used colored markers instead.

At this point, we were feeling the effects of a non-ventilated area and a lot of black marker.

Plus, my arm was hurting from all of the coloring I had to do to get the art just right.

Oh, and in case you've been living under a rock and know absolutely nothing about what happened, check this out.

Basically, when the Banksy print was auctioned off, it immediately started to shred. Isn't it freaking cool?!

Anyway, back to the DIY.

Like the millennial I am, I wanted to pay homage to the artist in the only way I know how, as a freaking topical AF Halloween costume.

Here is the final product, and I'm super excited to wear it this Halloween season.

Hopefully other people think it's as hilarious as I do (because I know you guys probably won't ?).

A Sim

I've seen this costume a bunch of times and wanted to try it out myself! The reason it's so easy is because you can wear whatever you want, you just need the headband!

At first, it kind of looked like some weird alien thing.

I played around with pipe cleaners, glue, and some green cardstock to create a diamond shape to attach to my headband.

And here is the result!

This DIY is honestly so easy, so cheap, and actually pretty darn cute if I do say so myself. Definitely perfect if you are actually lazy AF.

A Spiderweb

Diply | Victoria Stacey

I was browsing the Halloween aisle at the dollar store and saw these weird spiders and wanted to do something with them, but wasn't exactly sure what I should do.

Load Comments

I also grabbed some of that random cob web stuff that you see during Halloween to decorate.

Diply | Victoria Stacey

I decided I was going to turn myself into some kind of spiderweb with spiders, so I glued a bit of the web to the toy spider.

Load Comments

I attempted to use double-sided tape to get the toys to stick to me, which sort of worked.

Diply | Victoria Stacey

I didn't want to get glue on my shirt, so I tried my best to get them to stay. I'd recommend just getting yourself a plain black shirt to glue them to instead. Or find some heavy-duty tape.

The result was actually kind of cute.

But, if I were to do it again I think I'd try my hand at some funky makeup as well. I guess I've got lots of time to practice for next year!

Well, it's showtime!

I guess we'll have to see if people like these costumes as much as I did! I can't wait for Halloween!Oh, and don't forget to show us your costumes, too!
