108-Year-Old Woman Says Champagne Is The Secret To A Long Life So Bottoms Up

We all want to know what the secret to living a long and happy life is. Doctors will probably tell you it all has to do with diet and exercise, but personally, I'm more inclined to follow the advice of someone who's seen their 100th birthday and then some.

One woman just celebrated turning the big 108 (!) and had some words of wisdom for anyone else wishing to one day reach the same incredible milestone: drink champagne.

Well, you don't have to tell me twice.

Dorothy Flowers of North Yorkshire, England, credits her longevity to frequently popping a bottle of bubbly.

According to Yahoo News, this centenarian was born on October 22, 1911, making this her 108th year on earth.

She lived totally independently on her own until she was 104 years old.

The birthday girl is a resident at the Bupa-owned Southlands Care Home, Harrogate, where staff say she's a real socialite.

"Dorothy loves company, so she'll sit with us at the reception desk each day," resident manager Helene Ballinger said.

She's there so often that staff have given her her very own drawer in the desk, which they keep stocked with chocolate buttons.

But those chocolate buttons aren't the reason why this pensioner has lived to see her 108th birthday.

That all has to do with her affinity for enjoying some champagne.

"It's the only thing we ever see her finish a glass of," Helene explained. "Needless to say, we've been toasting her birthday."

Dorothy's big birthday bash took place on October 15 where she was overjoyed to receive 654 cards.

Prior to the celebration, staff at Harrogate's set out a plea for people to send the birthday girl a card with the goal of getting 108 cards to mark her incredible milestone.

However, their request ended up pulling in cards from all over the world, with people from Spain, Bangkok, Las Vegas, New York, and Australia sending their well-wishes to Dorothy.

In addition to the stacks and stacks of birthday cards, she also received a few presents.

Specifically, she got several bottles of champagne from people who hope to see Dorothy achieve even more birthdays.

Her niece, Judith, visits her regularly and says its the smallest gestures that can make the biggest difference.

"While she's not able to speak anymore, the smile on her face said it all," Judith said. "It was a wonderful surprise and has helped make her day so special."
