11+ Tips To Keep Houseplants Alive And Thriving

Okay, confession time. I'm only telling this to you because I'm slightly embarrassed but I kill plants. It's sad but true. I dunno why but I'm terrible at keeping plants alive.

In fact, two of my orchids just died a slow and painful death. Sob, sob. So if you're like me, hopefully, these tips will help you. I know I need to read these and implement them all.

1. Choose The Right Plant

First off, not all plants are suitable to keep indoors so do some research and find the ones that will thrive in your space.

2. Position Your Plants Accordingly

Some plants require a lot of sunlight in order to grow and prosper while others need the opposite. So place plants indoors according to that.

3. Know When To Water Your Plants

Some plants can be very temperamental and if you water them too much or too little, it could spell total disaster.

4. Drain Plants Properly

If your plant came with a pot that has no drainage holes that's no good. Most plants aren't supposed to stand in water and need drainage.

5. Do Some Pruning

If your plants or succulents are looking a little bit wild, it's probably a sign they need some pruning. Trim some foliage to keep them healthy.

6. Keep Your Plant's Foliage Clean

Who knew plants needed cleaning? I found that out recently. Just get a damp paper towel and run it through the foliage occasionally.

7. Mist Plants In Winter

Plants just like us thrive on humidity. But since it gets pretty dry in winter, you need to mist them once in a while.

8. Know When To Fertilize

I have to admit, this is the tricky part for me. Every plant is different therefore you really need to read up on their needs.

9. Repot Plants When Needed

If you notice that your plant looks crowded in its pot it's probably time to repot it. Get the right soil and do it.

10. Propagate Cuttings

The easiest way to get more plants is to propagate the plant's cuttings. Watch them get new roots and plant away to make your garden grow.

11. Rotate Plants

If you see your plant slouching to one side it's probably because you didn't rotate it. Make sure you do it often to prevent this from happening.

12. Cut Off Dead Or Damaged Leaves

The last thing you want is bad leaves to spoil the rest of your healthy plant. So cut them off right away.

13. Look For Signs Of Disease

Check your plants regularly to make sure they're not getting root rot from overwatering or going dry from underwatering or to spot any pests.

I hope with these tips you'll have better luck keeping your plants alive.

I know I need all the help I can possibly get. LOL! Otherwise, I'm pretty hopeless.
