Gary Sinise Gives Vietnam Veteran A New Roof After Bedroom Ceiling Caves In

Actor Gary Sinise is possibly best known for his role as Vietnam veteran Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, and it's clear by his work for the Gary Sinise Foundation helping out real life veterans that the role had a great impact on him personally.

Veteran Charles Fox learned this first hand after he struggled with a roof caving in on his longtime home.

Speaking to The Times-Reporter, 69 year old Fox said that his roof had several leaks that were not able to be repaired and that, “My bedroom ceiling fell in on me one night."

Fox served in Vietnam with the real-life version of the Army unit, the 9th Infantry Division, that Sinise's character served in in 'Forrest Gump.'

The new roof was provided through the Gary Sinise Foundation's Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment (RISE) program, which provides new roofs to veterans in need and their families as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project.

“They’re awesome,” Fox said. “Old Lt. Dan, he done good.”

In a statement by the Foundation, they said that RISE is a "nationwide effort is a way to show gratitude and honor the veterans who served our country and the families who support them."

Fox's wife, Janet, said, "What they’ve done for us is crazy, and boy, I’d like to meet Gary. He’s a great actor. I tell you what, they have improved our life."
