Human Ken Doll Reveals What He Looked Like Before His 70+ Plastic Surgeries

ryan.ford 22 Aug 2019

Rodrigo Alves has made a name for himself, but it's not really his own name. After undergoing more than 70 plastic surgeries in his life, he's better known as the Human Ken Doll.

Now, the Brazil-born British national is internationally known, having appeared on Britain's Celebrity Big Brother, and he's attracted more than 800,000 followers on Instagram.

It's unlikely that anyone has been able to go this long without seeing Alves or hearing about him in some form or another.

The man has continuously made headlines, largely for his reoccurring trips to the operating room and his remarkable plastic appearance (hence, the Human Ken Doll distinction.)

Now 36, Alves underwent his first cosmetic surgery when he was just 17 years old.

He's pretty much instantly recognizable now, but after having had so much work done, he's also understandably bears little resemblance to the person he used to be.

And although that's very much by design, it didn't start out that way.

Obviously Alves's extreme new look has some childhood origins.

And although he's known as the Human Ken Doll, his inspiration came from another source: Disney.

"I have always been a very creative person," he told The Sun, "I grew up watching Disney movies and I wanted to look like a prince when I was a child."

But the real start to his plastic surgery journey was the bullying he received as a child.

He had a medical condition, gynecomastia, which caused him to grow breast and chest tissue.

"I was bullied at school for that," he said. "I had my face pushed against a urinal because I had a wide nose. My parents were going through a divorce so I didn't bother them. If they had noticed or the teachers had it would have been a very different situation."

He admitted that years of bullying took a serious toll on his self-esteem and his self-worth.

"I do not like to focus on the past because it makes me upset," he said. "Growing up I felt alone as nobody wanted to be friends with me. Because of my body image and the fact that I was shy, I avoided social situations."

So, when he was 17, he underwent a procedure to remove the excess tissue.

Two years later, living in London for university, Alves started to get more procedures done, including nose jobs and liposuction. His vision for his best self was taking shape, and becoming reality.

But not all of his early procedures were total successes.

Alves admitted he underwent some botched jobs, which left him needing even more surgeries to correct the previous ones.

"While I was a student, I had my first few surgeries but with poor results," he said. "I was very young and I would just find surgeons online and go to the most expensive ones in Harley Street."

He said these less-than-ideal initial surgeries taught him a valuable lesson about the cosmetic game.

"This taught me that expensive doesn't mean good quality," he explained. "And that what makes a good surgeon is the practice."

When he flew back to Brazil after finishing his degree, his new appearance shocked his family so much they encouraged him to get therapy.

He was diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder, which causes a person to have a distorted view of their appearance. "I was born in the wrong body and I have spent my entire life trying to reveal the real me," he said.

Alves obviously hasn't looked back.

Despite a few hiccups, he has gone on to sculpt and shape his body as best as medicine will allow, including pec implants, bicep fillers, and fully artificial six-pack abs — hundreds of thousands of dollars of work.

He says he uses these repeated procedures to help him become his "true self."

"In my dreams, I look a certain way, but then getting up in the morning and looking at myself in the mirror I didn't recognize myself," he explained. "This is why I carried on having surgeries, seeking out the best doctors in the USA, Brazil, Europe, and the Middle East to help me become my true self."

Alves estimates he's gone under the knife more than seventy times.

Ten of those procedures were on his nose alone, but this repeated surgical work on it has caused serious health concerns for the 36 year old.

In 2017 it was reported he might lose his nose after too many procedures in too short of time left him unable to breathe with seriously destroyed tissue in his nose. Luckily, he was able to recover.

He maintains that since undergoing therapy, his family supports him 100%.

"People may think I am crazy, I am not. I have had psychological help. I was born in the wrong body," he said. "I am exotic, I am good looking. I think people look at me because I look different. I know exactly what I look like."
