When you move in with someone who you are in a long-term relationship with, making sure that you get on with their pets can be a big deal.
Some individuals will quickly bond with their partner's pets, some people will work at this relationship over time, and others will simply steal their partner's pet and take it to a shelter without them knowing...apparently.
The husband in question took to Reddit's TrueOffMyChest confessions page in order to share his shameful story.
He started his tale by simply explaining, "Six years ago, I swapped my then-girlfriend now-wife's cat with a more well-behaved lookalike."
He began by trying to articulate why he felt pushed to this drastic course of action:
"She had an all black cat that was extremely aggressive. It scratched everyone, hissed at everyone, and didn't use its litterbox half the time. My wife insisted she could get it to behave better. One week she went out of town to visit her family and I was supposed to go to her apartment and feed it."
On his first night with the cat, it scratched him.
"I joked to the cat that it's not special and I'll replace it if it scratches again. The joke stuck with me until I had thought about it enough that it wasn't a joke. The next morning I went to the local animal shelter. Found an identical cat who was already litterbox trained and acclimated to people, but was a little [skittish]."
The reason why he took his wife's cat to a distant rescue centre was that, "I was paranoid my wife would find out if I took it to a local one."
He then ended his bizarre tale by writing: "It's been 6 years since then. We got married 4 years ago. We still have the swapped cat. It answers to the original cat's name. My wife knows nothing. She loves this cat and brags about how much better behaved it is. Every time I see it, I feel like a total piece of s***."
Mostly, people were concerned at the fact that the shelter may have killed his wife's old cat.
Although, he did post an update writing, "For the people saying the other cat was likely euthanized by the shelter, I just double-checked and the shelter I dropped it off at was and still is a no-kill shelter." So, you know, silver linings and all that!
A surprising amount of responses were people telling this guy to just stay quiet about the whole thing.
"If this is real, under no circumstances should you EVER tell her. You will completely destroy her trust," wrote one person.
"I would absolutely be considering divorce if I ever found this out. Unforgivable," was another individual's reaction to the strange confession.
I don't think that I could ever forgive someone for this, what a truly terrifying thing to do to someone who you are supposed to love!
