German Car Park Creates ‘Diversity’ Parking Spaces For LGBTQ+ And Migrant Drivers

One German car park has recently unveiled three car parking spaces which are aimed at those drivers who are members of the LGBTQ+ community as well as migrant drivers.

There were three such parking spaces showcased in the underground parking lot, and they are said to be for those who feel "a special need for protection."

The car park is located in Hanau, Germany.

Thomas Morlock, city councillor and chairman of the supervisory board of HPG (Hanauer Parkhaus GmbH) who built the spaces, was thoroughly enthusiastic about the spaces.

In his own words, the spaces were there to help those who have "a special need for protection and security in public spaces."

Many questioned how the local authorities intend to monitor the spaces, which are marked with rainbows, are being used appropriately.

Morlock continued to elaborate the purpose of the spaces (pictured above), by saying that they were not necessarily for "separate group[s] of people," but that they were a "conspicuously colourful symbol" meant to encourage "diversity and tolerance."

Despite facing backlash for the spaces, Morlock has stood behind the idea.

While some have criticised the idea as simply dividing society further, some members of the LGBTQ+ community also questioned the reality of the idea while praising the intention. One individual pointed out that it could also simply make people targets of hate crimes:

"I find it [unsettling] because it puts you at greater risk of becoming a victim of an act of violence. It is best to distribute the 🌈 [symbol] throughout the car park," [Translated from German].

Morlock went on to claim that the spaces are more of a "symbol" than anything else.

"The partly homophobic and xenophobic reactions make it clear that the action was right and necessary," Morlock told the German press. "The parking spaces are not reserved, they are intended for everyone and should be a symbol of diversity."

At the moment it is unsure as to whether any other car parks will join in with this symbol.
