Women Are Amazing: Pregnant Doctor Postpones Her Labor To Deliver Another Baby

What's something you've done off the clock?

Was it ringing in a customer? Filing some last-minute paperwork. What about delivering a baby when you were about to deliver your own?

It sounds crazy, but that's exactly what happened with one Kentucky-based doctor. Her selfless act has proven what we already knew to be true: women are amazing.

This miracle doctor was Amanda Hess, an obstetrician-gynecologist from Frankfort.

She was moments away from being induced for labor when she heard a woman next door screaming in distress. Despite being in a hospital gown and about to give birth herself, she checked on the women.

“I just put on another gown to cover up my backside and put on some boots over my shoes, to keep from getting any fluid and all that stuff on me, and went down to her room,” she told TV station WKYT.

There, she recognized the woman in distress. Her name is Leah Halliday-Johnson.

She was actually a patient from Dr. Hess's practice who she happened to have seen the week before for a final prenatal appointment.

With the on-call doctor away from the hospital and a dire situation at hand (the baby's umbilical cord was around its neck), Dr. Hess stepped in.

“I said you know, I’m not on call, I’m here in a gown, but I think we ought to have the baby.”

Meanwhile, nurses had told Halliday-Johnson not to push. “I was not being quiet about the fact that it was difficult for me not to push,” she told People.

This was her fourth child, while Dr. Hess was set to deliver her second.

“She was definitely in doctor mode,” Halliday-Johnson told NBC. “My husband noticed something was going on because she had on a hospital gown, but I didn’t notice that because I was on the delivery table. I was in my own world there.”

Thanks to Hess's quick thinking, Halliday-Johnson gave birth to a healthy little girl.

The new baby joined a sister, 13, and brothers aged five and four.

"I had actually taken a call the day before, so I thought really that I was working up to the last minute. But this was literally ’til the last second,” Dr. Hess told TV station WLEX.

"She was just glad to be able to get to push and have the baby out and not have to wait any longer,” Hess added.

She then returned to her own room afterward, where she took off her boots and had her own little girl that same night.

The mom is super appreciative of what the selfless doctor did.

“Pretty amazing what she did,” she told news channel Lex 18.

“I feel very lucky she was there and the type of person she is and step up to do what she did. We really appreciate her.”

Those who learned of the remarkable story were also super appreciative of the doctor's quick thinking.

"U are amaziiiiiing. U make me proud to spell my name W-O-M-A-N!!!!" one user commented on Facebook.

"That is being a doctor. A real compassionate healer, not the crap that media writes about us being in it for money or wanting kick backs from pharma," another added.

Someone in the comments had another story of Dr. Hess helping her patients out when they least expected it.

"She also was on vacation when her family was in town 2 weeks before my sister's baby was due, she came in to deliver my nephew as emergency c- section bc her water broke early while she was also pregnant & on vacation bc she's that awesome," they shared.

"She is TRULY an AMAZING doctor!" another mother and patient vouched.

"She delivered my son and I have seen her for years and would not want anyone else! She has helped me in so many ways! She's a blessing!! You go Dr. Hess!!!"
