America's Oldest Working Nurse Retires At 96: 'I Don't Like To Sit Around'

What's the longest job you've ever had? These days, if you have anything more than 10 years of service to a company, that's considered admirable. But someone with 70-plus years? That's astronomical.

It sounds insane but earlier this month, America's oldest nurse hung up her scrubs for good after more than 70 years on the job. Now that she's gone, all her colleagues want to say is "thank you."

Earlier this July, Florence "SeeSee" Rigney retired as a nurse at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital.

Florence is 96-years-old and has been working as a nurse at the hospital for over 70 years.

Florence was a constant fixture at the hospital, and the only time off she ever took was during her pregnancy.

According to Florence, idle hands are the devil's plaything.

"I don't like to sit around – I've always got to have something to do," Florence said in an official hospital press release. "I love to interact with patients and give them the help that I can.”

Florence actually planned on retiring when she was 65 — more than 30 years ago!

But according to "SeeSee", retirement didn't take. Within six months she was back at the hospital in an effort to keep her mind sharp and body active. Now that she's retired for good, "SeeSee" looks forward to spending time with her family.

"Even working into her nineties, SeeSee has never been one to slow down," a fellow colleague said.

Others joked that SeeSee's fellow nurses, some of whom were more than half her age, had to quite literally sprint in order to keep up with her. They say that she was a dedicated nurse and her presence will be sorely missed.
