We Can't Stop Reading About People Who Are Sharing Their Worst Engagement Stories

Getting engaged is the first step to forever with your partner in life. Many people want to be proposed to in grand, huge ways with sentimental pieces and extra fluff.

Others want to have minimal, small, intimate proposals between just themselves and their partner.

However, there are some who end up getting the opposite of what they want and expect and it goes pretty poorly.

When your partner doesn't listen to your wishes.

"A friend of my sister had specifically told her boyfriend she hated public proposals and didn't want a bunch of people there, so what does he do but gather their entire extended family to do it. Ugh," one person shared.

These two didn't even know they were engaged.

One person shared that their parents got engaged at a grocery store when their dad told their mom,

"All of our friends are getting married, maybe we should too." And, he thought they were engaged after that. However, they've been married for 34 years.

The forced proposal. Yikes!

"Apparently when a friend of mine and his girlfriend got engaged it was because they were arguing in a restaurant and he just said "DO YOU JUST WANT ME TO PROPOSE TO YOU?!". She apparently took that as an actual proposal and talked about how cute it was to other people," another shared.

An actual surprise.

One girlfriend kept telling her boyfriend he "can't surprise her" because she'll know. After college graduation they were planning to move in together, so he told her one day he was "unsure" about their move.

She turned around crying, then he called her name and he was down on one knee. There's the surprise!

Someone else spoiled it for him.

"My cousin's marriage proposal was ruined because the person next to them at a booth told my cousin's girlfriend that he saw my cousin writing the marriage question underneath the table cloth while he was in the restroom (she was supposed to lift it up and see it later on)," one Reddit user shared.

I do, I guess?

There are some proposals that are just so half-a**ed that you're unsure if it's truly a proposal or not.

A Reddit user shared that his cousin proposed to his wife in a Burger King with an onion ring. But, the biggest surprise is that she said yes!

This one is just awful.

"Apparently [the girlfriend] asked her boyfriend (of 6 years) when he was proposing, in a casual way while they were driving.

He said “you have to do something for me first” and gestured to his crotch. Andddd she blew him, and he told her to open the glovebox, and gave her the ring. That was it," one person shared.

That's not the best idea.

One girlfriend said that her boyfriend tried to derail an important conversation by trying to propose to her. She had confronted him about his drinking problem and he tried to deflect by asking her to marry him.

She said no and he ended up going to rehab.

Ouch. That burns.

"He drove his girlfriend of several years to some part of the suburbs she was unfamiliar with and pulled up in front of a house she'd never seen before.

She asked where they were and he said "It's ours." He'd gotten a mortgage. He proposed there in the car. She said no and dumped him on the spot," another shared.

Sorry, that's not going to cut it.

One guy said his roommate got so lazy about it that he actually threw the ring he got to his girlfriend who was laying on his bed.

And, when she saw it, she didn't say yes. Instead, she told him to "do better."

Marry me, but this isn't your actual ring.

"I heard a story on the internet once in which a guy borrowed a ring from a store owner and proposed to his girlfriend. She said yes, then he immediately gave the ring back to the store owner. She was pissed after that," one person wrote.

That's...romantic?

One person shared that their coworker was at her boyfriend's house and he had gone to the bathroom. When he was done, she went in after.

While she was in there, he called "Did you see what I left you?" She said she wasn't looking in the toilet, it was gross.

Turns out, he left the ring taped to the seat.

Maybe a bit too morbid for "I do."

"My wife's friend was proposed to by her boyfriend (at the time) at her grandmother's grave.

Her grandmother recently passed, and they were there to put flowers on it, and he proposed. On Christmas Eve. I cringe every time I am forced to remember this happened" one person said.

Either you're in or you're out.

One Reddit user shared that he didn't even propose, his girlfriend demanded they get married because they had been together so long.

Turns out, the same thing happened between his mom and dad, too. Seems to run in the family!

Ignore the garbage bags!

"My own proposal: I got the ring, but had no real plan, and was too excited to wait. At the time, both of us lived like slobs, so there were garbage bags everywhere waiting to be taken out. When I asked her out of pure excitement, I didn’t notice it was right next to the garbage," one husband shared.
