Mom Asks For Advice After 'Ruining' Her Daughter's Life Over A Dress

Few things in life are priceless. A custom-made wedding dress made by a late grandmother is definitely one of them.

Sadly, this was ruined by one mother's teenage daughter. In return, she made her daughter pay for what she'd done — to the tune of $15,000. Then, she was accused of ruining her daughter's life.

Yep, this story is messy. Get out the popcorn for this one!

Everyone knows that a wedding dress is sacred.

This is why Reddit user @MadeHerRepayTheDress (spoiler alert) brought her story to the AITA (Am I The Asshole) community to gather opinions.

She began by sharing that she and her ex had their 16-year-old daughter very young.

One big rule they have is making their daughter pay for something she broke.

So this is where the backstory comes in. The mom and her sister are the only grandkids.

The sister/aunt worked with the grandparents at their seamster store and took it over when they retired.

When the sister's girlfriend proposed, the grandpa sweetly offer to make a custom suit for her.

As for the bride-to-be, the grandma asked the OP (original poster) to ask what her dream dress was and record the convo.

"Sis, thinking it was just between us, told me in great detail what her dream dress was, though said it was way too expensive, so she would get something much cheaper."

Cut to a few months later when grandma surprised the sister with her dream dress.

Sadly, the grandma passed away soon after. "Sis was devastated, but decided that the dress meant Gma would still be there with us at the wedding."

This is where the drama involving the OP's teenage daughter comes in.

The mom explained that her daughter is a lot bigger than the aunt.

Despite this, she asked if she could try on her wedding dress during a visit.

"Sis politely said no. C made a face, but dropped it." Well, when the two sisters went to grab dinner, C tried the dress on anyway.

"We got back, and the dress was destroyed. C had apparently tried to get it on, popping some seams, and got stuck," they wrote.

"Instead of waiting for help, she cut her way out. The dress was hacked to bits." The sister was devestated.

She asked them to leave and the mom grounded the daughter.

When the OP asked her sister for pictures to make a new one, a bomb was dropped.

She shared that their grandma hand-sewed most of the dress, used super expensive fabric, and put almost 500 hours into making that dress since it was the only family wedding they'd have.

In total, the dress cost around 12,000 dollars.

The mom made her daughter send the "fun money" she had saved for college to her aunt. This ended up being $12,000 for the dress and another $3,000 for the emotional distress.

The daughter cried and later admitted that she hacked the dress apart in anger since "if she couldn't have a dress from Grandma, no one could."

When the OP told her ex what had happened, they said that the mom "shouldn't" have "ruined her future" for a "free" dress.

"I reminded her of our rule, and she still thinks I'm wrong." This is where she turned to their Reddit community for their opinion. Pretty quickly, they let her know that she wasn't in the wrong.

"She 'ruined' her own future," one Reddit user wrote, adding that the dress was "priceless" and could have been passed down for generations.

Another shared how horrified they were by the daughter's behavior.

"A 16 year old should know better. I would give her further punishments, not just handing over her 'fun' money," they wrote.

Some even wondered if she has mental health issues.

One wrote that "15k is a small price to pay for dealing that kind of emotional damage."

The OP also shared that her sister has Crohns disease and the stress of everything has her on the verge of a hospital visit.

This is definitely some wild family drama! Do you think the mom was right to make her daughter use her college "fun money" to pay for the $12,000 dress? Let us know in the comments!
