School Janitor Surprised With Graduation Celebration After Earning College Degree

When you work in a position for a long period of time, it's nice to celebrate milestones in your life with your coworkers and people who are your colleagues.

Sometimes, people want to celebrate your accomplishments in big and unexpected ways when you reach a goal in your life. It can be moving and heartwarming to see how much people care.

Recently, one school janitor was shocked when he was celebrated at his elementary school position.

Derrick Harris, an elementary school janitor, had the opportunity to celebrate his college graduation with the kids and staff that he had worked with for years while completing his degree.

It was a moving and touching moment for everyone involved.

Wacoochee Elementary School in Salem, Alabama celebrated the janitor's major milestone.

The 26-year-old completed his degree at Wallace Community College Selma. He now has plans to move on and finish his final years of college at Auburn University at Montgomery.

The staff at Wacoochee Elementary School helped Harris make a class schedule where he could complete his degree and also work full-time, as well.

In a moving video shared to Facebook, Harris shared his excitement and gratitude.

"Words cannot explain the surprise I got this morning from my coworkers & students what I thought Tracie Freeman Lane wanted me to take pictures in my cap and gown turned into a victory lap," he wrote.

He thanked each and every person who helped him get to this point.

"As I’m currently in the process of closing this chapter of my life to opening another. I just wanted to say thank you my coworkers, students, & parents that put their trust in me over the past years I loved working at Wacoochee Elementary now it’s time to impact students at West Forest Intermediate School," he said.
