11+ Little-Known Mistakes We All Make That Could Damage Our Homes

Having a house can be extremely rewarding while also quite expensive. So, when most of us get one, we want to take good care of it. Unfortunately, that's not always the easiest task, as there are little-known mistakes that could be damaging many of our homes. Luckily, we've compiled some of the key mistakes you'll want to know about and avoid.

Don't spray directly on any surface.

When it comes to cleaning sprays, we often immediately spray the dirty surface we want to clean, when in reality, we need to spray it on a towel or sponge first. When spray makes direct contact with a surface there's a high likelihood there will be a residue or film left behind.

After you shower, dry off sooner than later.

This may seem silly but the truth is that when we get out of the shower and drip water on the floor, it can cause damage. If you have wooden floors, regular water spill can cause the wood to wear down over time.

Never forget to occasionally clean your dishwasher drain.

While many rely on the self-cleaning mode, it's actually wise to manually clean the filter to ensure that it's sufficiently disinfected.

This may seem like common sense but many people overlook it when they're making some delicious food on the grill. A lovely Sunday BBQ could easily turn into a fire hazard if the grill isn't at a safe distance from your home.

Avoid pouring grease down the sink.

When disposing of bacon or cooking grease, avoid pouring it down the drain. That grease can easily thicken, harden and obstruct your drain.

This may sound ridiculous but it's probably not a good long-term decision to leave your towel in the bathroom. After you shower or take a bath, the moisture will absorb into the towel and become the home of harmful bacteria.

Plastic cutting boards are easily cut up and damaged, which means they're more vulnerable for bacteria build-up.

Many cultures have already caught onto this tactic, as it prevents dirt and grime from being tracked into the home. Plus, it stops toxic bacteria from spreading around the house.

Slamming a door may not only be an unhealthy response to anger but is also capable of throwing the door out of alignment. It could make a gap in the middle of the trim and the jam.

While the view may be beautiful, but having sun damage all over your furniture isn't. So, it's best to close your curtains occasionally to avoid permanent damage.

We know that many people can't resist filling their closet with clothes, but using so many hangers to support so many clothes can take a toll on the closet rod. The bracket can also become stressed enough to pull out the wall and possibly destroy your dry wall.

Finally, don't leave moist clothing in the washer.

There's nothing quite as cringe-worthy as discovering your clothes are moldy and smell absolutely disgusting. However, that's the fate that awaits damp clothing that are left in the washer or dryer too long.
