Leonardo DiCaprio Is Donating $43 Million To Help Wildlife In The Galápagos Islands

Leonardo DiCaprio is incredibly generous when it comes to the environment.

He gave $3 million to save ocean wildlife in 2014 and has started his own Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. The foundation's mission is to protect the world's wildlife.

Now, it's been announced that he will donate $43 million to help rewild the Galapagos Islands. This is home to 54 threatened species.

In keeping with his dedication to wildlife, the famed actor has pledged to "rewild" Galapagos Islands through a $43 million donation.

For those who don't know, the Galapagos were made famous by evolutionary pioneer Charles Darwin.

It houses 54 threatened species and has been known as a world unto itself.

The donation comes at a good time, as the island has endured tough times as of late.

Ecuador’s Environment Ministry reported the collapse of the top of the famed Darwin's Arch.

Officials blamed natural erosion of the stone.

The *Shutter Island* actor's plan will work with his conservation charity Re:Wild, the Galapagos National Park Directorate, Island Conservation and local communities.

"Around the world, the wild is declining," Leo wrote. "We have degraded three-quarters of the wild places and pushed more than 1 million species to the brink of extinction."

His generous donation will also fund a captive breeding program to prevent the extinction of the pink iguana.

If you want to follow along on his plans, be sure to stay up-to-date on his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

They will be taken over by wildlife veterinarian and island restoration specialist Paula Castaño.
