A Cat Named After Ed Sheeran Is The Latest Star Of The Viral 'Mr. Sandman' Challenge

Viral cat videos are definitely nothing new. They're a dime a dozen. Ever since people were first able to upload clips of their fur babies to the internet, they have plastered these monotonous videos just about everywhere and anywhere they can to shove them in our faces.

So when I heard there's some cat TikTok video taking the internet by storm, I was skeptical about just how good it could really be. After all, haven't we seen enough cat-themed videos to last us a lifetime?

Well, as it turns out, there's room for one more spectacular video. But this is definitely the last one.

The 12-second video was uploaded to the popular video sharing website, TikTok.

In it, 17-year-old Canadian high school student Jade Taylor-Ryan gives the spotlight to her sweet feline, 4-year-old Ed (named after Ed Sheeran, who Jade says he shares a passing resemblance with.)

Although she only just recently joined TikTok, Jade's latest video has quickly gone viral, thanks to Ed's massive star quality and some creative editing. It currently has 6.8 million views and 1.2 million likes, and it was only just posted on Friday.

The video is set to the 1954 Chordettes' song, "Mr. Sandman", a classic bop if I've ever heard one.

With the help of his owner, Ed can be seen clapping his paws, peering into the camera, and expertly showing off his acrobatic skills as the opening to the song plays in the background.

Featuring the app's signature nine-camera split, the end result is a beautifully synchronized dance to "Mr. Sandman" that deserves every award possible. And that's not even an exaggeration. I'm serious. Check it out for yourself below.

Jade said the idea just randomly popped into her head one night, and we are super glad that it did.

She told Buzzfeed News that she put her phone on the ground with a self-timer to film it so she didn't have to use her hands, which were definitely needed for swinging Ed in and out of frame.

As for anyone worried about the cat, Jade assures them he is "very chill."

"We pick him up and move him around all the time and he doesn’t really care, so I figured I would be able to do the same thing for the video," she said. "Turns out, I was right!"

As it turns out, Jade's video was her way of taking part in the viral "Mr. Sandman" meme going around on TikTok.

The only difference is she decided to use her cat to make the result even better than the others. In fact, it's so popular people are demanding a full-length version.

Because it's such a viral meme, Ed's video has some other human renditions that, while somewhat entertaining, don't strike the same hilarious chord as his.

As Jade explained, "I think people love it so much because of how well it's timed, and just seeing my cat's calm expression during the entirety of the film while all this twisting and spinning is going on is honestly pretty funny!"
