For COVID-19 patients, the pandemic has been especially isolating.
While quarantined from friends, family and the outside world, people have experienced intense bouts of depression. But those feelings are all the more amplified when they're sick and alone in a hospital's COVID ward.
One nurse saw the pain that her patients were experiencing and found a way to give them the kind of comfort that they truly needed. Or at least, as close to the real thing as she could.
According to G1 Globo, Semei Araújo Cunha, a nurse at the Vilo Prado Emergency Care Centre Unit in Sao Paolo, realized that being without human contact was taking a toll on her patients.
So she decided to do something about it.
For those patients who were feeling the immense effects of their virus isolation, she filled two rubber gloves with warm water and tying them together to simulate the warmth and touch of human hands.
When placed around the patient's own hands, the gloves offer the feeling of being held and comforted.
Along with the picture, the journalist wrote,
"'The hand of God' - nurses trying to comfort isolated patients in a Brazilian Covid isolation ward. Two disposable gloves tied, full of hot water, simulating impossible human contact. Salute to the front liners and a stark reminder of the grim situation our world is in!"
With over 8,000 likes at the time of this writing, it seems that many people can appreciate the helping hand this nurse, and evidently others, are offering their lonely patients.
As if treating people during a global pandemic isn't hard enough, so many nurses are going above and beyond to care for their patients. Much like this nurse in Brazil, they think of unique ways to connect with those that are isolated. We feel inspired by such an innovative and compassionate idea.
