Stunning Photo Captures Natural Phenomenon Of Hummingbird's 'Rainbow Wings'

If you live in the city or don't exactly pay attention to the world outside your four walls, it can be easy to forget how spectacular and often awe-inspiring nature can really be.

But all it takes is one person armed with a camera in the right place at the right time to remind us of the wonderful world we have the privilege of living in.

Back in 2018, professional photographer Christian Spencer was standing on his verandah in Rio de Janeiro.

According to My Modern Met, he noticed a black Jacobin flying across the sun above him, compelling him to grab his camera and snap a few photos.

Spencer is no stranger to the hummingbird and has previously recorded the bird's movements for the award-winning 2011 short film, The Dance of Time.

As he explained, he knew this was his opportunity to capture something extraordinary on film.

"I decided to try and photograph the phenomenon with my camera," he explained, adding that the pictures he managed to snap of the bird reveal "a secret of nature that cannot be seen with our own eyes."

Spencer posted the photographs from his "Winged Prism" series to his Instagram account.

The stunning photos capture the moment the bird's delicate feathers filter and separate out the spectral colors from the sun, creating a prismatic rainbow effect in its wings.

"This photo contains no digital manipulation," Spencer wrote in his post, just in case anyone might have thought this gorgeous display was the result of a Photoshop job.

The bird's "rainbow wings" are a natural phenomenon that cannot be seen by the naked eye.

Thankfully, they can be captured via a well-timed camera lens and a skilled photographer.

In the same Instagram post, Spencer revealed his breathaking photos won him the Prize of Fundação Casa da Cultura Macedo Miranda no 44º Salão da Primavera at the Musem of Modern Art in Resende RJ, Brazil.
