By 2010, they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend — going steady. In 2012 the pair announced their first engagement.

At which point, Miley's Bangerz phase commenced.

She was wildin' out a little bit — like most people do when they're going through a breakup.

Though the two never publicly confirmed their relationship, they didn't do much to hide it either, being photographed kissing on multiple occasions.

The lyrics deal with loving someone but her not being able to fill the place in her heart that someone else has left behind.

Miley was sporting a brand new engagement ring, and the pair looked happier than ever.

In December 2018, the pair tied the knot in a secret ceremony.

And looking back, it seems as though there were several obvious signs that the pair were headed for that dreaded split.

While recently singing her hit "Wrecking Ball" at the Tinderbox Festival in Denmark — a song originally written about their initial breakup, she uttered the words "I'm [expletive] sick of men".

Let's address the elephant in the room. Neither Miley or Liam have been wearing their wedding rings, and we have proof.

However, to be fair, Miley did say back in 2016 that wedding rings aren't really her "aesthetic".

Fans noticed in a series of Instagram posts that Miley's wedding ring was nowhere to be found, and started to get suspicious of the split.

The last couple-photo Liam posted to his Instagram was on June 2nd.

The last photo Miley posted a photo with Liam was from the 2019 Met Gala.

Miley has hardly ever been modest. But it seemed a little bit peculiar that she was suddenly posting such a suggestive photo on social media, and fans grew suspicious.

In an interview with Elle, Miley opened up about her sexuality and what it has been like being in a heterosexual marriage.

"And I don't know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it's so complex, and modern, and new that I don't think we're in a place where people would get it. I mean, do people really think that I'm at home in a [expletive] apron cooking dinner?"

"People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still [expletive] good, and I know that. I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don't fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don't even like that word."

Liam is nothing if not a supportive boo, and when Miley's had projects come out in the past, they have been all OVER his feed.

He captioned the shot of the album's cover with, "Check out this little hotties new album! She's got a bright future ahead ;) Get it while it's hot! #youngernow."

Even when she had nothing in particular to promote — like when he shared this picture and captioned it "Girls got talent. She might just make it...WOW to the awesome dude (me) for taking such an incredible photo."

Not a single post! Which is pretty unheard of for Liam. We should've known he would've been all over hyping his wife up under any other circumstance.

Liam told GQ Australia that once they didn't "have so many dogs," he wanted to have "10, 15, maybe 20" kids with Miley. Okay, so he was probably exaggerating a little, but he definitely was looking forward to it.

When speaking to Elle Magazine about climate change, Miley said, "We're getting handed a piece-of-[expletive] planet, and I refuse to hand that down to my child. Until I feel like my kid would live on an earth with fish in the water, I'm not bringing in another person to deal with that."

"If you don't want children, people feel sorry for you, like you're a cold, heartless [expletive] who's not capable of love. Why are we trained that love means putting yourself second and those you love first? If you love yourself, then what? You come first."

At the time it seemed like harmless jamming to an old song, but after news of the split, it feels a lot more pointed.
