Pickle Pizza Is An Idea So Strange That It Just Might Work

I’ve been on record as a skeptic of the pickle-everything fad. I mean, I love pickles, but not to the point where I’m okay with the idea of artificially flavored cotton candy. Personally, I feel like fluffy spun sugar should taste like fluffy spun sugar. Call me crazy.

But I’m not against the idea of using pickles in new and interesting ways beyond just eating them out of a jar with a fork.

So when I heard of pickles on pizza I was more intrigued than revolted.

I may be firmly in the “Pineapple does not belong on pizza” camp, but that doesn’t mean I’m not adventurous with my pies, and I can see pickles working. A chef with a good sense of balancing flavors could do magic with the briny spears.

Rhino’s Pizzeria in New York State claims to have been the first to create a dill pickle pizza.

Rhino’s version features a white garlic sauce, mozzarella, pickle slices, and a sprinkle of dill weed.

Which sounds pretty delicious.

Another version makes the rounds on social media takes a cue from a Minnesotan snack called “Minnesota Sushi.”

Apparently, the local treat involves coating a pickle in cream cheese and then wrapping the whole thing in Canadian bacon. Which sounds pretty damn tasty, so no wonder QC Pizza in Mahtomedi, MN was inspired.

The biggest difference between the two viral recipes is the Canadian bacon. And layers.

The pie features a garlic dill sauce covered with a layer of Canadian bacon and then a layer of pickles. Then they add a layer of mozzarella cheese before covering it with even more pickles.

Well, I’m hungry now.

Of course, these are just the pizzerias who have had their pickle pizzas go viral.

If you snoop around, you may find that there’s a place in your area that has their own version. Or you could try making it yourself at home. In terms of homemade recipes, it seems pretty simple to replicate.
