Mindy Kaling Spoke Out About Being A Diversity Hire On 'The Office'

Mindy Kaling is basically a household name now thanks to her two successful shows.

She starred in The Office and was the main character of The Mindy Project which were both major successes.

So Mindy Kaling is a boss.

We knew that already.

But she continues on her streak of boss moments now that she's doing press for her new film Late Night.

Mindy plays Molly Patel.

In the film, Molly is a writer for a TV show, who ends up in an awkward writers room.

She ends up in a writers room that is full of white males.

The failing late night show writers room hired her just for the diversity.

As it turns out, this isn't the first time that this has happened to her!

NBC

Say it ain't so!

But unfortunately, Hollywood is like that. Actually, tons of corporations are like that.

Mindy got very real about her own experience that she had to deal with.

NBC

"I thought it was fun to actually talk about diversity hires in a really open way, because I was a diversity hire for The Office," she said.

At first, obviously, she was embarrassed.

NBC

"I was so embarrassed that people would know about it, and I wouldn’t tell anyone" she said. "I thought, 'Okay, well...the other writers will think that was the only reason I was hired.'"

But she refuses to be embarrassed about it ever again.

NBC

"What I didn't realize then was that it wasn't something to be ashamed of, that this really great organization was giving me something that other people have born access to," she finished.
