'Game Of Thrones' Actor Conleth Hill Says He Was 'Frustrated' With His Character's Plot

Hear ye, hear ye, we're once again diving head first into the world of Game Of Thrones, people.

While the world of (frantically googles the name of the Game Of Thrones world) uh... The Known World crumbles around us, we sit back and enjoy the chaos.

Squalors ahead!

Giphy

Yes! You'll see the squalors for the most recent episode of Game Of Thrones in this article... what's that? Oh I'm sorry, I always get those two mixed up... I meant:

SPOILERS. SPOILERS AHEAD

Now that they're gone...

HBO

We can talk about the absolute decimation that happened in "The Bells", also known as Season 8, Episode 5 of Game Of Thrones. Because oh boy, there was a lot of it.

Dany goes on a murderous rampage.

HBO

Hate to sound like a tattle-tale here, but it's exactly what she does. She kills thousands of innocent people across King's Landing.

A bunch of people die.

HBO

This includes the Lannister twins (Rest In Peace, thanks for the unceremonious ending to the series' biggest bad guys), we lost the Cleganes (#CleganeBowl) we lost Euron (uh, yeah) and we lost Qyburn (who? Oh yeah, the doctor guy).

And it leaves the future uncertain for most people.

I guess Danys going to become the Mad Queen now... does this mean we'll see a showdown between her and Jon? Does this mean they'll kill each other, then Arya will sit on the Iron Throne like some brilliant genius predicted?

Well, uncertain for most.

HBO

It seems I left out one person's death during my brief "death list". Yes, it was that of Varys, the Spider, the man who knows all the whispers in the world.

Couldn't have seen his own death coming though!

Let's recap... again.

HBO

So far, Varys had been pretty lucky in Season 8. He survived the battle of Winterfell, he survived Melisandre predicting his death in Season 7 (seems he outlasted you, Melisandre mate).

However, he could not escape his latest act.

HBO

So Tyrion tells Varys about Jon Snow's true lineage (he's a Targaryen) and then Varys confronts Jon about it. He also confronts him about Dany, saying "we both know what she's going to do" (i.e. burn down King's Landing).

And then, he sends out a bunch of letters.

HBO

Through his little birds, he informs select people in the seven kingdoms (or at least what's left of them) of Jon's Targaryen heritage and is eventually arrested. He and Tyrion say goodbye and he's burned alive by Drogon.

Not a bad death, in my opinion.

HBO

He was always kind of snakelike and as much as we enjoyed his character, he was sneakily treacherous. He died protecting the realm, which has been his great love since the beginning of the series.

One person, however, was both sad and frustrated.

And that would be Conleth Hill, the man who plays Varys. He did an interview with Entertainment Weekly talking about how he felt about the character's death. And don't worry folks, this is juicy gossip.

He starts out by describing how he felt once he heard about the death

Instagram | @hello_conleth_hill

He says "I took it very personally. I took it as a person, not as an actor or an artist. I understood the reactions of previous actors who had been in same position a lot more than I did at the time. You can’t help feeling that you failed in some way, that you haven’t lived up to some expectation that you didn’t know about."

Then, he talks about how Varys has kind of slipped away in recent seasons.

He continues: "That’s been my feeling the last couple seasons, that my character became more peripheral, that they concentrated on others more. That’s fine. It’s the nature of a multi-character show."

Finally, he shares his feelings on the last couple seasons.

He concludes: "It was kind of frustrating. As a whole it’s been overwhelmingly positive and brilliant but I suppose the last couple seasons weren’t my favourite. It just felt like after season six, I kind of dropped off the edge."

What do you think?

Do you think Varys' death was valid? Or do you think, like Jaimie and Cersei's, it was lame and underdramatic? Honestly, a man who goes behind people's back so much was bound to get killed for treason.
