Spiders are useful little weirdos. I don't mind hosting a web or two in my house. They keep all the other creepy crawlies in check, which is honestly a bro thing for them to do. Would you rather deal with a few spiders, or a whole army of bugs? But spiders should never be a surprise. And when they are a surprise, well, there can be problems.

Distracted driving is a thing.

We all know that we really should focus entirely on the road, not on our phones, when we drive. While phones are kind of a deliberate distraction, sometimes distraction comes out of nowhere.

Arachnophobia is also a thing.

I can't say whether or not arachnophobia played a role in this story, or if it was just that this spider popped up and surprised the poor driver at the wrong time.

Spiders can be a bit scary.

It isn't a rational fear (well, there are plenty of poisonous spiders...), but arachnophobia is something that most people are familiar with. Heck, it was even the title of a 1990, uh, thrill-omedy, starring John Goodman.

Allow me to paint a picture.

You're driving along, feeling great. You're as carefree as the happy guy driving a big white van in this stock photo: just enjoying the day without a care in the world.

Suddenly...

Something that happens in a split second can cause a car accident. In this case, in case you weren't following along with our subtle foreshadowing, that "something" was a spider.

The deets.

It's pretty great to see the local police take a humorous tone in their account of the accident. I mean, they are joking about a car crash...but at least she wasn't seriously hurt.

The post caused a stir.

Whether it was a haunting allusion to a vague story from the past or a highly specific reference that, from the sounds of things, the tagged person would probably rather forget, the story was engaging.

An emotional roller coaster.

There's just so much here. Susan talks about the fateful day she took decisive action in a similar situation (along with her best wishes), Sharyn can literally not even, and Vanessa is simply cool as a cucumber.

I mean, until spider panic reports become an epidemic, it probably isn't fair to question her story. Like, she just had a spider encounter and totaled her car. She's had a tough day.

Something needs to be done.

It's impossible to know whether the spider survived the crash or not. But if it did, it's a spider that caused a car crash. I don't know if we want that kind of evil in the world.

Double down.

The masses concur: Kill it with fire. Judging from the pictures, it looks like the car has already been thoroughly killed...just with a spider surprise rather than fire.

Yikes.

The car is pretty badly smashed up, and the driver is probably lucky to not be more badly hurt. Jokes aside, images like this show the consequences of just one moment of distraction.

It was a close call.

Cairo police responded to the call, presumably towing the wrecked car away and getting medical attention for the driver. It's amazing how much chaos a random encounter with a spider can lead to.

Stay safe out there.

Sometimes, distracted driving isn't caused by a cell phone. Sometimes, it's something random happening while you're piloting a bunch of metal at fast speeds. It's super important to stay focused when you're driving.
