13+ Behind-The-Scene Secrets About 'Naked And Afraid'

If you've never seen Naked And Afraid, it's basically a reality show where they take two people, strip them down, leave them in the wilderness to fend for themselves, and see what happens. It's intense AF.

Why do people volunteer themselves for this torture? I do not know. It's entertaining though.

Unfortunately, not everything shown is completely authentic, because like most reality TV shows, most things are staged for our benefit.

The object of the show is for the contestants to survive in the wilderness with no clothes, only each other, for 21 days.

Forget surviving, I would just feel awkward being completely naked in front of someone all day everyday.

I imagine that by day five they probably smell foul.

With nothing to conceal their natural scents, and no hygienic toiletries, I'm guessing they start to smell horrible pretty early on in the process.

But hey, that's what they signed up for I guess!

They're probably a lot more focused on surviving than they are on how pretty they smell.

Nonetheless, I'm sure it's a far from pleasant experience.

Who knew that watching two nudists trying to survive in the middle of nowhere could be so addictive.

The show has been running for eight seasons now.

The entire appeal of reality TV is that it's suppose to be unfiltered, and unscripted drama.

However, that is hardly the case for most, if not all reality TV shows. Including this one.

Some previous contestants from the show have spoken out on some of the inauthenticities about the show.

Warning: this is going to ruin the show for you.

The show is mostly scripted.

The term "reality TV" doesn't hold much truth to it. You can almost always take everything that happens on reality TV shows with a grain of salt, because chances are, it isn't real.

One contestant revealed that the producers would try to instigate arguments between teammates to spice things up.

Apparently the survival element by itself is simply not enough to keep viewers engaged, so producers would provoke drama to try to make things a little more interesting. They would also give the contestants certain topics that they were forced to discuss on camera.

Another contestant said that he stole chocolate and Campari from a nearby fishing hut.

Nothing more romantic than being naked, in a forest, on a reality TV show with your significant other, enjoying mushy, melted chocolate and chasing it down with a swig of lukewarm Campari.

Some of the contestants steal food from the producers.

One of the contestants allegedly snuck off with snacks brought by the producers, including some peanut butter, chips, bread, trail mix, and Frosted Flakes, that lasted the contestant and his teammate the entire duration of their time on the show.

The show takes place just a few miles from civilization.

They're not really in the middle of nowhere.

One of the contestants reported hearing club music thumping on most nights.

Nothing says wilderness quite like the sound of people partying.

One contestant called the show a "nazi experiment."

Honora Bowen, a two-time Naked And Afraid contestant who has started a blog about her time on the show.

It definitely wasn't all rainbows and butterflies. There is an extremely dark side to the show that she felt compelled to expose.

Aside from staging narratives, Honora says the producers would ask her questions in attempt to trigger emotional responses.

Giphy

This sort of circles back to the producers trying to provoke drama from their cast for the sake of maintaining viewership.

And she accused them of sexually assaulting her while she was "blacked out".

Honors alleges that while she was blacked out, the producers groped her, and pinched her nipples.

Yikes.

The producers denied the allegations, and threatened Honors with a lawsuit.

Unfortunately, there wouldn't be many ways at this point of proving if the allegations are true or not. But I hope that if they are, Honora gets justice for herself.

One of the producers was nearly killed by a snake once.

Before shooting the season that took place in Costa Rica, a country made up of rainforest filled with various kinds of dangerous wildlife, a producer was scouting a strip of land to film on, he was bit on the foot by a fer-de-lance snake.

I'll spare you the gruesome details, but let's just say, it's a haunting experience I'm sure he will never forget.

Fer-de-lance snakes kill approximately 125,000 people each year.

So, the producer should probably consider himself lucky.

It's kind of ironic that while producing a show about surviving in the wild, he, himself was forced to survive in the wild.

When survival expert and filmmaker, Les Stroud, was interviewed and asked about teaming up with the show, he had some unkind words to say about it.

Giphy | Shark Week

He referred to Naked And Afraid as "fake, contrived, set-up, pretend, or otherwise a lie."

One contestant alleged that the producers gave her a magnifying glass for starting fires, and told her to say that it was gifted to her by her late father.

Giphy

This is just despicable.

The show claims not to offer any sort of prize to the contestants for being on the show.

Telegraph

However, it turns out they do offer a cash incentive of $20000 to $25000 to contestants who complete the entire 21-day-challenge.

Sounds like a prize to me.

Contestants receive help from the producers behind the scenes.

YouTube | Discovery UK

When a contestant gave herself food poisoning and was vomiting for three days straight, the producers gave her bread, rice, and baby food. But didn't explain anything to the viewers.

Load Comments

So basically, one episode she was puking uncontrollably, unable to carry on, and the next episode she was miraculously better with zero explanation.

YouTube | Discovery UK

There's nothing wrong with giving her the help she needed to continue, but it would have been nice to know how she got better so suddenly.

Load Comments

There's always the possibility that none of this is true, since it's simply hearsay by previous contestants.

YouTube | DocuTV&more

Let's not rule out the idea that the contestants could be making all of this up for publicity.

You know what they say, all publicity is good publicity.

Even though all reality TV is kind of trashy and usually staged, it's still entertaining. I'm obviously going to keep watching it and melting my brain cells.
