The saying should make sense if the two consenting adults are in a happy, healthy relationship, though.

However, as far as one couple has experienced, some people seem unwilling to give love a chance the second they face an unusual relationship.
To get a sense of what 20-year-old Lou Nesbit and 56-year-old Egon Kowalski do for a living, one need only ask them where they met.

Lou is an erotic model and Egon acts in adult films, so it's not a surprise that they first laid eyes on each other at what Lou described as a "porn shoot."
Lou said the two were "very much physically active together" during their first meeting, but it seemed that Egon's personality also made a good first impression on her.

As she told The Mirror, "One of my friends set us up at a party, because she knew how I felt about him. We can laugh a lot and talk about everything, that's why we are attracted to each other."
Despite their age difference, Lou described Egon as being very similar to her.

As she put it, "I love his humor, his charisma and the way he is always there for me when I need him, that we can talk about everything."
Egon was a little uncertain about how the 35 years between them would affect their relationship, but it never bothered Lou.

For her part, Lou said she had never condemned that aspect of other relationships and was confident they'd work it out fine.

She told The Mirror, "He was a bit skeptical at first, but he quickly realized that the other things are more important and that these other things we have in common means we fit together perfectly."
The couple were also lucky enough to not have to deal with much family drama when the announced their relationship.

As Lou said, "My family took the news of our relationship easy. Of course, they first asked a lot of questions, but when I explained everything, they understood and accepted it. His family as well."
However, the same can not be said for how other people, especially online, view their relationship.

Lou said they often get odd looks and whispers from younger people when they're outside together, but those on social media are more explicit, calling their relationship "perverted" and "disgusting."
Unfortunately, much of this backlash seems to be directed at Lou in particular, who critics accuse of only being in the relationship for sex and money.

To that, she said, "I am sad that many doubt our love only because of the age difference."
She went on to say,
"If they were to live with us for a week as a silent observer, they would realize how much we really love each other."
Usually, the German couple tries to laugh off and ignore comments like these.

Although they've never really discussed getting married, Lou said she could imagine it someday. Regardless, it seems their love is here to stay.
As Lou said, "Relationships don't depend on things like age, gender and appearance, but how happy you are with each other and how to deal with each other and nobody can judge from the outside."
It will always blow my mind why other people care so much about other people's relationships.

If they're happy and love each other, shouldn't we just wish them the best of luck?
