People Are Baffled By This Dog That Looks Like A Statue

Lynne Versluys 14 Jan 2019

This rare breed of hairless dog is baffling people online.

An Interesting Breed

Caters

Everyone thinks that their dog is the best dog, and Sandra Pineda, from Quezon City, Philippines, is no different. When she shared a picture of her beloved dog Piper online, she did not expect for the image to be liked tens of thousands of times or to receive an avalanche of questions along the lines of "is that a dog or a statue???"

A Very Good Girl

Caters

Piper is a Mexican Hairless Dog or Xoloitzcuintli, and Pineda bought her last year when she was still a puppy. She couldn't really believe all the questions or people's doubts that Piper was flesh and blood.

"It was so funny to see all these compliments coming through of people thinking Piper was a statue.

They were all really confused and asking me whether she was real or not."

Joke's On Them

Pineda says that she is flattered by the people who think Piper is so beautiful that she could "be a work of art," and she thinks that those who don't like the hairless look should give Piper another chance.

Some people don't see Piper's beauty or her regal look which baffles me because I think she's gorgeous.

I think people should give Piper, and all Xolos and other hairless dogs a chance, because they're really the sweetest and funniest pups you will ever meet."

Plus, according to Pineda, a hairless dog is much easier to maintain. A life without hairballs in the corners of your home? Sounds like a dream.

In some ways, it's easy to see why some might be confused about whether this dog is alive or a statue.

Piper Is Smooth, Shiny

On first look, Piper does appear shiny, smooth and well-defined. Many statues share those same qualities.

Take A Second Look

But clearly, when you see a side by-side picture of Piper just standing there, with a picture of Piper, tongue sticking out and tail wagging, it's obvious Piper is a flesh and blood dog.

This Xolo Is Just Being A Xolo

According to dogbreedinfo.com, Mexican hairless dogs, also known as "Xolo," can be in three sizes: toy, miniature and standard. And the dog can either have a coat or actually be hairless. For the hairless variety, dogbreedinfo states: "Its skin should be soft and smooth, yet hardy to the elements." In other words, Piper's just doing her thing.

Remember Rachel's "Cat"?

Now might be a good time to reminisce about the time Rachel from "Friends" got a hairless Sphynx cat, because it reminded her of when her grandmother had the same kind of cat.

Joey's insistence that "It's not a cat" was all of us that day. Sorry, Rachel.
