19+ Hacks To Help Get You Organized

To say that my clutter situation has gotten a little out of hand would be an understatement. In fact, calling it an understatement is probably an understatement. Last week, the hook in my coat closet ripped right out of the wall due to the sheer weight of all the coats and scarves piled on it.

I should really deal with that, huh?

Use pop tabs to double your closet space.

The Krazy Coupon Lady

This would probably help solve my problem of too many coats for one poor hook. If I could fit more coats in the very narrow space left for hangers, then I wouldn't have so many looking for a home in the first place.

Use a cutlery tray in the bathroom.

Ask Anna Moseley

A decorative bamboo tray would look lovely filled with makeup, brushes, and other odds and ends. For toothbrushes and such, a plastic tray is easy to clean if toothpaste scum gets into the cavities.

Plastic soda can rings make decent scarf storage.

Making Lemonade

This idea from Making Lemonade is a great way to keep those rings from harming the environment while also getting organized. It would work well for belts or ties, too.

Keep your cords in reach with binder clips.

Lifehacking

I use this trick for my iPad cable in the living room. The only decent outlet is behind the couch, so I attached a binder clip to the side table to save myself from having to yoga the cord out from wherever it fell.

Use Velcro to corral extra remotes and game controllers.

Off the top of my head, I have three remotes and four game controllers floating around the living room. 99% of the time, only one of each is actually being used. This is much tidier than the bottom shelf I pile them on right now.

Make things easy to find with lazy susans.

Deep pantry cupboards hold a ton, but that doesn't do you any good if you can't see what you have or you have to take everything out to reach the baking powder you use twice a year.

Add some under-the-bed storage with an old drawer.

The Painted Home

Just add some casters so that it can easily roll in and out from under the bed frame. Paint them to match the room and they'll be cheaper and nicer than a plastic bin.

Coffee creamer bottles are great for reusing.

FrugElegance

Their spout lids are perfect for dispensing candies, nuts, or any other small snacks. Check out FrugElengance's tips for how to get the label off easily.

Fit more in your drawers by stacking them sideways.

Whether you're storing linens, towels, or t-shirts, this method fits more in the same space while also making it easy to see all of your options at a glance.

Use a shower caddy to organize your car fluid bottles.

Reddit | Pez-guy-Nolan

It'll look much tidier and save you from listening to that bottle of washer fluid rolling around in the truck every time you hit the breaks too hard.

Hang pots and pans with Command Hooks.

Storing pots and pans is always a pain, but this trick can keep your most-used ones tidy and easy to grab when it's time to cook. I'd stick to lighter weight pans for this, as cast iron may test the limits of the hooks.

Use office storage in the bathroom.

The Real Thing with the Coake Family

I love this idea from The Real Thing with the Coake Family, which uses a piece meant for file sorting to hold washcloths neatly and sort them by who uses each type.

Keep car cords and other small items in travel containers.

Just A Girl Blog

Just A Girl Blog used these containers meant for cotton swabs to keep hair ties and their AUX cable from getting lost in the center console.

For the glove box, pencil cases work great.

Reddit | arjo_reich

They'll keep all your documentation and odds and ends sorted. Instead of having to lean over and dig awkwardly for something, you can just grab the case and set it on your lap.

Use the styrofoam packaging to hold and organize parts.

Reddit | nevernude143

If houseware manufacturers are going to insist on still using styrofoam, then you may as well put it to use during assembly. Stick screws and nails around the outside to grab easily, and they'll act as a wall to keep things like dowels from rolling away.

Hide that messy powerbar with a dollar store bin.

Hometalk | Time With Thea

If you have a home office, cords are just part of the deal. A solid plastic bin like this one can hide them from view and the handle funnels the cords inside neatly. Bonus points for the labels.

Use photo or CD albums to sort tiny supplies.

Reddit | RenaKunisaki

The example shows transistors, but you could use the clear inside pockets to sort buttons, embroidery floss, needles, or any other tiny items that are part of your favorite hobby.

Add a file sorter by the door to deal with the mail right away.

Instagram | organizedtosave

I should do this. I have a tendency to toss anything that isn't a bill on the side table by the door. Eventually, the stack topples onto the floor and I'm forced to actually get around to filing or recycling everything.

Use shower curtain rings to hang tank tops in the closet.

Beloved Style

A single tank top kind of feels like a waste of a hanger and the thin straps always slide off anyway. This trick will keep them all on a single hanger and keep them off the floor at the same time.

Organize fabric in a filing cabinet.

Craft Your Happiness

If you're not a quilter or sewer, this may not apply to you, but even though I'm neither of those things, I still love this. It's a great way to see all your fabric and easily add and remove pieces without risking the pile tumbling.

Organize sunglasses with small Command Hooks.

Reddit | TheBottomOfTheTop

Just stick a couple of hooks by the front door and you'll never forget your shades on a sunny day. This would also work for regular glasses if you own more than one pair.

Install a tension rod under the sink to hang spray bottles.

Hometalk | Shawna Bailey

Not only will it make them easier to grab, but it'll free up space in the cupboard for the other cleaning supplies that always end up squished in the back.

Turn a dollar store sheet pan into a magnetic command center.

The Crazy Craft Lady

A bit of pretty paper makes the pan almost unrecognizable, or you could also paint the pan if you wanted to mask it further.

Hang mugs under the cupboards with a cooling rack.

Hometalk | Abbie M

While you're getting that sheet pan, grab one of the small cooling racks too. Use a couple of hooks to secure it to the underside of your cupboards and you can hang mugs from it.
