Dog Makes Sure To Always Guard Family's Most Prized Possession: Bread

It's no secret that animals and humans have vastly different ideas of what's considered "valuable" and not.

For instance, if a fire happened to break out at my house, I think I'd sooner be inclined to protect the family heirlooms than a dirty stuffed owl that squeaks and is missing a wing. But if you were to ask my dog, he'd probably ask you to reexamine your priorities.

One family's pup thinks she has a pretty good idea of what her owners value most in their home, and she's determined to keep it safe by any means necessary.

That "valuable possession" just happens to be a loaf of bread.

Yup, you read that right: this 6-year-old Rottweiler named Jakey has no interest in safe-guarding anything else, but she will go out of her way to protect her family's bread supply while they're gone.

So if you're thinking you can just waltz in that place and make yourself a sandwich, you've got another thing coming.

Jakey's mom, Katrina Frank, said the dog assumed the role of "bread guardian" four years ago and has made it her fulltime gig ever since.

“We have a bread box so she likes to hop up and pull it out of there,” Frank told The Dodo. “If I leave it in the pantry instead, she nudges the door open and gets it out. I've put it in the refrigerator before and she has opened the door to get to it.”

Don't get it twisted, though — Jakey doesn't eat the bread. She just guards it, and diligently at that.

Frank assumes her well-meaning pup has determined bread to be the most valuable item in their home because the family uses it so much.

Usually, once she's secured the loaf from the bread box, Jakey will then hide it behind the couch and lay beside it, keeping a watchful eye out for any potential bread thieves. Sometimes she's even put it inside her mom's closet for safe-keeping.

Once the family's returned home, Jakey will take her mom on a tour of the house, showing her exactly where she stashed the "goods".

I know what you're thinking: what does Jakey do if there happens to be no bread in the house at all?

Well, that's when she turns her attention to baked goods.

“Once she took a Tupperware of cookies off the counter and hid all 17 individually without breaking any," Frank recalled. "She led me to all of them.”

She's also been known to hide butter on occasion, too.

Frank recently shared a video to Facebook of Jakey's bread-guarding in action where it quickly went viral.

"Jakey the Bread Protector had to pull an overnight shift ensuring things were safe here, because mom had to work an overnight away," Frank captioned the hilarious clip. "Garlic bread is a top 3 favorite carb in our house, so she had to be extra vigilant in making sure nobody stole it."

If nothing else, at least this family can rest easy knowing that if anyone ever happens to break into their home, there's at least one item the thief won't be able to take: their carbs.

Thanks, Jakey!
