More Than Half Of Americans Want Trump Removed Before Inauguration, Poll Says

The majority of Americans believe that Donald Trump should be removed from office before his term formally ends on January 20, when President-Elect Joe Biden will be sworn in as his replacement.

A new poll conducted by ABC News and Ipsos found that 56% of those surveyed want to see Trump removed before Inauguration Day, with another 67% believing he's to blame for the violence at the U.S. Capitol last week.

A majority of independents (58%) and 94% of Democrats supported the proposed removal, along with 13% of polled Republicans.

Among those Americans who insisted Trump shouldn't be removed, nearly half (45%) did admit they believe his actions this week were wrong, but removing him from office early isn't worth the effort.

In the aftermath of the violence at the U.S. Capitol last week, which left five people dead, pressure has been placed on President Trump to resign early.

As ABC News reported, he's also facing a second impeachment as House Democrats are expected to introduce articles of impeachment early this week, accusing the president of having “gravely endangered the security of the United States and its institutions.”

No president in the history of the country has ever been impeached twice.

The same poll asked respondents who among several prominent political figures (including Vice President Pence, President-Elect Biden, and Utah Senator Mitt Romney) they trust to safeguard American democracy.

Biden received the majority of support on that particular question, with 53% of people saying they would trust him.

However, these results still signal a significant political chasm in effect before Biden's even been sworn in — 94% of Democrats agreed, while only 14% of Republicans said they trust the incoming president.

Senator Romney obtained the most support among Republican figures (with 41% of respondents saying they'd trust him) while an incredible 71% of Americans said they don't trust Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Only 30% of respondents said they trust President Trump.
